I may be getting on myself but since when is a film released in 1967 "more than half an century old"?

Not read the full article yet but it doesn't take long to get to the bit where you find out that the movie was basically an adaptation (ie copy) of the 1958 tv series of the same name...

I think everyone might have guessed that from the fact that they have identical names and writers

For myself, I prefer the original 1958 one, but it's only by a short margin - the Hammer version is excellent in it's own right.

Certainly I regard it as superior to the film versions of the other Quatermass stories, mostly because in those the character of Quatermass himself undergoes such a massive rewrite, changing from our dogged English professor into an arrogant, loud-mouthed Yank wearing a bad toupee.

Quatermass in the Pit is really much closer to the original and Andrew Keir is very good as the professor, frankly a way better actor than Donlevy

I found the film a considerable disappointment compared to the BBC serial. That was mainly because the reduction in running time meant that so much background material and philosophical detail had to be deleted. Andre Morell was also a much better actor than Andrew Keir and was far better in the title role.

Crikey! I knew it was coming to dvd again, but not Blu Ray! cracking, I still remember watching this as a kid, and it was one of the few films to scrare me to death! seriously disturbing back then.

Will wait till its in the sales and bang its mine! must have been a looong time since I last saw it.

A comprehensive and accurate review, thanks.

I've just got this on BR and think that the presentation is marvellous; I saw none of the small bits of print damage you mention.

Something you couldn't do was review the accompanying DVD; upscaled, I found the picture quality to be similarly excellent and indistinguishable from the Blu-ray !

All depends on the size of his TV/Viewing Distance of course! The blu-ray transfer is excellent and definitely Hi-def, but the film is obviously not looking very sharp by today's standards so I'd imagine if you have a TV that's around 42" or less and handles standard definition very well, it's possible the DVD could give the Blu-ray a run for its money.

I'm at 42" and there's a level of detail way above DVD. Of course, I have things like DNR and other video processing turned off.
