Far Side: absolutely!
Dilbert: it's mostly office humor, and Scott Adams' political and other views have gotten increasingly rancid (and are sometimes expressed in the strip). I say skip this one.
Instead of Dilbert, I would recommend Pearls Before Swine. Bill Watterson is a fan, and I think it would appeal to 12-year-olds too.
Also, there's Bone, and the classic Donald Duck/Scrooge McDuck comics, particularly by Carl Barks and Don Rosa.
