The Exorcist III :Directors Cut (Is finally coming)

I know many people who love this overlooked and underrated gem have hoped for years that some day Morgan Creek would go back and give us a Directors Cut.

Over the years Morgan Creek have said the footage is lost or no longer exists and even Blatty himself and Mark Kermode tried tracking it down but to no avail. I myself never believed it was lost and as with Nightbreed felt Morgan Creek just had no interest in looking for the footage.

Nightbreed of course had it's over due directors cut released last year thanks to Scream Factory going on the hunt for the missing footage and finding the original camera negatives for it all. I'am sure the success of this finally led Morgan Creek to reassess The Exorcist III.

Shot back in 1989 and originally titled Legion with no Jason Miller or Exorcism Ending. Morgan Creek got cold feet partway through the production and wanted changes. Blatty was off the picture and the Cinematography Gerry Fisher stepped in for the reshoots and new ending.

Enough of my mumblings. Over the past year Morgan Creek have been posting the odd tweet regarding The Exorcist III DC and now Blatty himself has broken the news.

Quote:
And as for the news most people have been salivating about: the Blu-ray re-release of The Exorcist III (LEGION), and the missing (supposedly "lost") footage. All I can say is:

Me: Morgan Creek have been posting some rather cryptic things on their Twitter account with regards to a DVD special release. Can you shed any light on what they may be talking about?

Bill: They are planning a new Blu Ray of "my cut."

Regarding HOW the missing footage was found, Bill has said that it's not clear as yet.

Keep checking TNC.com in the new year for further news! Exciting stuff ahead.

And for those wondering how Morgan Creek lost footage too two films back in 1989/90. At that time 20th Century Fox had distribution rights to Morgan Creeks films . But come 1991 Warner Bros bought the rights, it was at this time when moving films elements to Warners that things got mislaid and it seems alot of negative got moved to a Storage facility that everyone forgot about.

Excellent news!

I absolutely love this movie and I'd say it's the film I wanted to see restored as a full director's cut the most.

Blatty is 88 now and i think many of use hoped that we'd get to see a DC in his lifetime and next year we finally will.

I hope they give us both cuts of the film remastered and a commentary from the man himself plus an interview with Brad Douriff.

Better than the original Exorcist IMHO.

Can't wait to see the Director's Cut.

According to mark kermode on Twitter this has been debunked by Blatty himself. Sadly not going to happen it seems.

Hmm yes. I saw the tweet last night and am not sure what to think at the moment. Maybe Morgan Creek just want everyone to be hush hush about it for now until they announce it themselves.

https://twitter.com/KermodeMovie/sta...24027055362050

When Morgan Creek have been dropping tweets about for the last few months and then Blatty confirms it to his #1 fansite.

I'd trust Morgan Creek and Blatty more than Kermode.

Why would Blatty say outright that they're planning a director's cut only then to turn around and say it isn't so? Does seem odd.

Methinks Blatty has been told to hush..

Thats more like it,

It's pretty unlikely they'd ask him to come to LA if there was no footage. Morgan Creek have obvisouly been working away over the past 12 months locating the footage and now its at the stage for Blatty to oversea a final cut with an editor for the upcoming blu ray.

Just small bit of news. As of this year Morgan Creeks film catalog is no longer owned by Warner Bros and Scream factory has already announced special edition blu rays of Bad Moon and The Crush.
So its only a matter of time now before they announce Exorcist III given the fact they already tried to license the film two years ago, so its a given now the films available that they will be the ones to release it.

The only bad news is that Scream always lock there release so anyone who doesn't own a region free player i think its time to get one.

This is it lads the moment has come.

Quote:
***NEW TITLE ANNOUCEMENT***

You’ve heard the rumors for months…and they’re all true! William Peter Blatty’s cult favorite THE EXORCIST III will be bearing its cross on a 2-disc Collector’s Edition Blu-ray set from us on October 25th.

Extras (of which there are tons of) are underway and will be announced at a date in Late Summer / Early Fall. The newly-designed front-facing artwork from Joel Robinson you see here is final (not pictured is the reverse wrap image which will showcase the original theatrical poster art.) Early pre-order now directly from us @ https://www.shoutfactory.com/…/the-e...ector-s… and receive a free 18" x 24" poster of the new art (while supplies last) plus early shipping!

We know that the biggest question you might have is: Will there be a “Director’s Cut” of the film? The answer is yes—but with some caveats. We are working on putting together a version that will be close to Blatty’s original script using a mixture of various film and video tape sources that we have been provided with. This is still a work in progress and we will update you with more details at the time we announce the full list of bonus materials.
