Scorsese Box Set from MGM; Raging Bull & New York, New York SEs!

Hot on the heels of the Warners Scorcese set, thedigitalbits.com Rumour Mill reports:

MGM also has a Martin Scorsese Film Collection tentatively due in early 2005, which will include a New York, New York: Special Edition, a Raging Bull: Special Edition, The Last Waltz: Special Edition and Boxcar Bertha

Beat me to it: why the previous SE is non-anamorphic is anyone's guess...

As I said in the other Scorsese thread, I just hope it's not a repackage as the old R2 Raging Bull is a Special Edition, it's just not very special (non-anamorphic bare-bones first disc and barely any extras on the second disc )

P.S. The old SE was non-anamorphic because they just repackaged the previous version using the same disc but threw in a cheap second disc to make it seem special. It's much cheaper for them to reuse the old disc than create one from scratch (which would need BBFC certification on all the new elements and the new transfer, which costs money and takes time).

Not sure about getting the set as the other three are my least favourite Scorsese films.

I hope these coontain new Special Editions as it will be a great compantion to the Warner set. Raging Bull and New York, New York are a must, the others will prob be the previously released versions. Still, i imagine the price will be good, hope we hear more!

I'm not overly fond of "Raging Bull" but it's still an essential purchase. I adore "New York New York" and "The Last Waltz" though. As for "Boxcar Bertha", definitely worth seeing but it's easily my least favourite Scorsese film.

Methinks Mathew Hopkins must be summoned to weed out the heretic.

My fav Scorsese. Meh, I'm predictable... and half-Italian.

My favourite Scorseses are "Mean Streets", "Taxi Driver", "Last Temptation" and "The Age of Innocence". "Raging Bull" is a great piece of filmmaking but I don't like it, I don't find it rewarding to watch and I don't feel the need to see it regularly as I do with the others. But, as I said, it's still essential viewing.

It seems a bit strange to me that we aren't getting a Box Set containing the Scorsese/De Niro canon ie containing: Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, King of Comedy and Goodfellas (maybe Cape Fear aswell).

I would have thought that this would have been the most logical way to release a Scorsese boxset. Could it be that Taxi Driver is owned by another company?

Taxi Driver is Columbia/Tristar, King of Comedy is Fox, and Universal own Cape Fear - you can see the problem...

Besides there's a Warner boxed set with Goodfellas SE, Mean Streets (not in UK though due to different distribution rights), Alice Doesn't Live Here Any More, After Hours, and Who's That Knocking At My Door?.

Boxcar Bertha any good? Scorsese as a director for hire and his own comments on the film in various interviews don't encourage me to pick it up.

It's quite weak, but of interest for being an early film of his. Can't say it's a film I've ever enjoyed watching other than just out of interest of Scorsese's film making and how he's changed since.

Full details, and artwork, of the box - now confirmed - have been posted at DVD Times here ; those SEs (non-anamorphic for New York, New York aside - MGM; whatchagonnado?) look quite tasty don't they?

Excellent! Looks a great set to compliment the WB set (save for New York, New York's non-anamorphic transfer).

They look very tempting indeed. Will certainly be picking this one up forthwith.
