Reging Bull 25th Anniversay - DVD Times Review

I've reviewed the new MGM SE release of "Raging Bull" for DVD Times.

You can find my (somewhat rambling) review here

Man, that sounds tasty. Is it coming out on R2?

Without sounding like a suckup (for a change) I don't think your review rambles at all, Mike - it encapsulates pretty much exactly everything I've ever felt whilst watching Raging Bull very succinctly.

As a minor gripe I quite enjoyed the level of grain in the previous MGM transfers (it suited the film very well) and initially didn't like the grain removal that MGM have implemented on this version - but, hey, you can't have everything: as a package, it's much nicer.

The only thing I disagree with in that sparkling review is either Taxi Driver or Mean Streets being Scorcese's best film - I happen to think Raging Bull is it, but heck we could debate this till the end of time...

And as usual, I ought to be banned from visiting these forums as I sense my tired credit card coming out again... nightmare! When will I stop buying these damn things?

Thanks guys.

Anephric - I take your point regarding the grain and I kind of agree with it

Mike - I think they're all great so I listed my personal favourites

Is it this version;

http://www.playusa.com/playusa.asp?p...page=1&Cur=513

(Can't see a US affiliate for Play??)

That version only mentions Collectors Edition, nothing about 2 disk 25th Anniversary Edition

Can't seem to find a mention of a 2 disk 25th Anniversary Edition on Play, Amazon or Soon??

That's it.

It's cheaper at Dvdsoon, and specifically says "Discs:2".

Raging Bull

Thanks for that!

Not going near Soon now - have just cancelled 3 box set orders with them which I have been waiting on for between 2 and 3 months (which were in stock when ordered AND paid for 2-3 months ago!)

Now that I have cancelled, they then tell me that the refund will take up to 21 days - INCREDIBLE

Never answered any of my 6 e-mails either

In addition, the Alias S3 boxset I had shipped almost 4 weeks ago is not here either, again have mailed them about that and again no reply.

Shocking customer service IMHO

But thanks for the reply

Watched this last night. Very good package, with an excellent anamorphic transfer.

Raging Bull - The Ultimate Edition coming September 26, but no details on extras I'm afraid.

3 commentaries just passed on the bbfc site - 1 by Scorsese, another cast and crew and other by Storytellers

Sounds like a port of the R1.

Storytellers are Mardik Martain, Paul Schrader, Jake La Matta and La Motta's nephew. Top track!

Not to be confused with the R2 20th Anniversary Edition, which is a 2 disc set but it's awful. Disc 1 is the same old disc that was released previously and is non-anamorphic and bare bones and disc 2 has a scattering of pathetic extras.

I bought this when it came out. Had just bought my dvd player and was replacing all my old favourites on dvd regardless of extras or disc quality. Apart from the film there is nothing to recommend it.

I have to admit that I've had the thing for 5 years and only skimmed through it. I've not sat down and watched it because it's non-anamorphic (I've seen the film before loads of times though, and similarly it was a VHS to DVD upgrade).

i don't think the "Jakes Jokes – 6 segments of Jake La Motta sharing stories from his past" feature is included in the R1 SE...so the R2 is a better version?

'Jake's Jokes' was featured on the previous R2 and R4 editions; it does exactly what it says on the tin - nearly six minutes of Mr La Motta telling what he thinks are funny gags.
