I've seen the first half of this (not on HD-DVD - that's on its way) and feeling underwhelmed at the moment. I wish they would transfer the HK originals.

Underwhelmed sums up my feelings too, the sound was very good but the picture was very soft throughout I thought. There were a few scenes that had that HD pop but not many. Still it compared with the presentation in the cinema so I guess its down to how it was shot. Still a top film though.

Can you chaps confirm that the HD is missing the 'Scorsese on Scorsese' doc that's on the R1 DVD?

Unless it's hidden on an easter egg, the HD-DVD version doesn't contain the Scorsese on Scorsese documentary . The two documentaries it does contain, plus 20 minutes of deleted scenes, are very good, though.

Thanks bosque. That's depressing news though; for once there's an extra feature I'm actually interested in & it's missing from the HD releases (I presume the Blu-Ray disc won't have it either.)

(Note: The standard-def DVD release of 'The Departed' also includes an 85-minute documentary, "Scorsese on Scorsese," which has been dropped from both the Blu-ray and HD DVD versions. However, this extra was produced in 2004 for the Turner Classic Movies network, long before the director started work on 'The Departed.' It also still plays on cable, so its exclusion here is hardly fatal.)

I'm so disappointed that the documentary has been missed from the HD releases - I suppose I'll wait for the DVD to appear in a sale & pick it up then.

Doh! Probably the only HD-DVD release at the moment that had my finger hovering over the buy button! I'll rent the DVD until the CE HD-DVD comes out then ... and not on a bloody flipper!

I don't know what film you guys were watching but I have just gotten round to seeing it and I thought the picture quality was great. It's very smooth but with a slight sense of grain. The detail is good too. You can always make out the individual threads on clothing and there is a scene where Matt Damon is talking to a woman through a screen door and you can see the thread there as well.... all the little squares.
I liked the movie, already having seen infernal affairs, I knew what was going to happen, but it's still pretty good. Specially Jack Nicholson.
It's a bit of shame about the documentary but I think I have seen some of it before. Also Scorsese can be a bit boring when he's talking. He has interesting things to say, but..... it's way he tells em.... monotone and hurried. It tries my patience.

The picture quality is superb, the whole movie was very clear especially the landscape shots with buildings in the background!

As for the movie, it's a great remake but I preffered the ending on the original. It dragged a bit in the Departed.
