And yet... if BluRay won, there would be no sub £150 players, or supermarket cheapies from China, and since that is a necessary condition for a format to succeed, I don't see how it can. I just hope that Criterion go for HD-DVD (if they go for one at all), because that'll be it settled for me

There is no anamorphic as the default resolution of HD is widescreen.

The War

For either format to succeed and overtake DVD, it has to appeal to the public. People say that the quality difference isn't noticeable to the public between HD DVD/Blu Ray and DVD, but I think they know. As soon as they buy a HD TV and plug in their DVD player, they can see the difference. Of course, price is a major factor but also it has to be worth it, too. Better picture and sound quality is great, but people are now used to extra features so the HD equivalent should have the same features, but should in fact have more. For some reason, Blu Ray are not doing that.

OK, there might eventually be sub £150 players, just as you can currently buy a Sony DVD player for under that price, but what I mean is that without the big market push from cheap Chinese players, the price drop and mass market acceptance is not going to happen; and as Brozyniak rightly pointed out, with Sony licencing costs these cheap machines aren't going to happen (soon)

I don't know what the licensing costs of DVD where but I expect the licensing costs of Blu-ray to be similar to those of DVD at launch. Clearly that will come down to a point that those manufacturers will start to manufacture. This is up to the BDA (not Sony) and they are expected to be wary of too fast a drop. One of the reasons we have a new format so soon is because the bottom fell out of DVD too soon. We'll get sub £150 players soon enough but perhaps a year longer than it took on DVD.
