More importantly Joe average isn't going to chuck out a perfectly good DVD player and buy a more expensive HD player, then start chucking out his/her shiny disc collection only to replace them with more shiney discs. HD/BR = SACD? Almost certainly.

So current cheapest prices are £250ish for a PC blu-ray drive and £8ish per 25GB blank disk?

That drive+media cost is on a par with my first external 1x CD writer

Hmm, 40 disks to backup 1TB...

But with HD DVd there's no need to throw out your hundreds of DVd's. On the contrary, they'll look better when upscaled.

Blu-ray also plays your old DVD's!

True and I don't think, maybe I'm wrong, that upscaled DVD on a HD set looks much better than a DVD on a SD display. At best they'll look as good as they did, in some cases worse

And I believe DVD. It's strange how new formats tend to cost the same as the previous format did to start with.

DVDs certainly look better on my LCD than they did via RGB on an old CRT. Films do anyway.

I'm watching Channel 4 news and there is a report on shortly about how BluRay is winning the format war

If you're happy with DVD, which Joe Public will be, there's no point in buying a HD player. Just like there was no point in buying a SACD Player when CD was just fine.

I'm not suprised if it's true. I've gone back to buying DVDs because the HD-DVD releases are really thin on the ground.

They didn't exactly say it was winning, just that sales have overtaken those of HD DVD. Some of the commentators said it was too early to write off HD DVD as cheaper chinese players were on the way.

I almost feel I have to upgrade. Otherwise I've wasted £1300 on a LCD TV.

If? It seems that BD took off (in the US) in mid-november. Sales have climbed dramatically. They reached a weekly parity near the end of December and a 2:1 lead in mid-Jan. They gap grew even larger and it's likely that sales are now 3:1

The CH4 report was nothing new, although most viewers wouldn't know. Fairly balanced I report with that journalist telling us that HD DVD is far from dead and they'd be releasing those mythical "cheap chinese players" later this year.

Why? Does SD look awful on your LCD screen?

Is that like the mythical 'rumour of region coding being introduced in the summer for HD-DVD' that you failed to back up in the bargain forum?

I didn't know there was any doubt cast on that claim!

Well, no one can really say when it'll end, that's the problem! It may be effectively over soon, but that doesn't mean Toshiba will throw in the towel. They could go on for years, selling a few thousand units a week. I wish they wouldn't though, they're harming the future of HD on disc.

Oh there is, there is - where did you see this?

It seems important to clear up, as you seem to be using it as an argument against buying a HD-DVD player in the bargain forum, in almost a mischievous Sony-marketing-stylee so it would be good to set things straight for people, rather than telling them fibs in order to sway them towards the format you support.

You really *don't* work for Sony do you? Do you?!
