New York gets destroyed
For no real reason, I'm trying to come up with a list of every film that has New York destroyed, or attacked, or blown up in some way ...
Armageddon - meteors hit NYC
Deep Impact - flooded by tidal wave
Independence day - destroyed by aliens
The Day after tomorrow - frozen solid
Godzilla - ravaged by Godzilla

Escape From NY - it's seen better days in this flick!
Ghostbusters - Marshmellow Man?

Deluge (1933), Meteor (1979) and When Worlds Collide (1951). The latter it appears to be in active development for the re- make/imagining/cycler by Stephen Sommers [gulp]
Plus numerous pulp magazine covers, from the twenties onwards, featured the iconic image of a partly submerged/buried Statue of Liberty later borrowed by POTA. So you can add: Planet of the Apes (1968), off screen, and Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), where a post-apocalyptic New York gets finished off once and for all.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.
"I'm ordering the military to bomb New York City!"
"But, Mr. President, the tomatoes are nowhere near New York City!"
"Look, Mr. Dixon, you worry about your problems and I will worry about mine!"
When Worlds Collide
Mars Attacks
The Core

The poster artwork (also on the Video and Soundtrack artwork) for Escape from New York featured a similiar wrecked Statue of Liberty imagery even though it was completely wrong (like many movie posters of the time) for the plot of the movie.
