Yeah Im suprised how CGI these days don't compare to JP. Why is this?

Gollum was highly praised when LOTR was out, I think its starting to show its age already.

How much of JP was CGI though. From what I remember from the "making off" programmes is it is mainly 1:1 ratio models. Models will look better than CGI a lot of the time as it is real.

Gollum still looks great.

The one film that still looks like it was made recently is T2 and that is older than JP.

Apart from the Mr Kipling Cherry Bakewell tins used for the T-1000's bullet holes.

Universal has now announced the deluxe extended edition. The three-disc set will be available from the 14th November this year, and should cost around US $35. A limited edition gift set will also be available from the 14th and this should cost around US $80. There are no details on what this will include yet; who reckons a Kong statue ala LotR gift sets? Specifics are still to be announced.

Updated specs from The Digitalbits :

Here you go... Universal has finally sent over the complete DVD details and cover art for the King Kong: Deluxe Extended Edition, due to street on 11/14 (SRP $34.98). The 3-disc set will include a 13-minute longer version of the film in anamorphic widescreen video, with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. The film will be split over the first two discs in the set. The new footage will include over 230 additional special effects shots. Some 40 minutes worth of additional deleted scenes will be included separately on the 3-disc set as well. Here's the disc by disc breakdown:

Disc One - The Film, Part One - audio commentary with director Peter Jackson and co-writer/producer Philippa Boyens, 16 deleted scenes

Disc Two - The Film, Part Two - audio commentary with director Peter Jackson and co-writer/producer Philippa Boyens, 5 featurettes (The Eighth Blunder of the World, The Present, A Night in Vaudeville, Kong Kong Homage, Weta Collectibles) and theatrical trailers

Disc Three - The King Kong Archives - introduction by Peter Jackson, 8 featurettes (The Origins of King Kong, Pre-Production, Part 1: The Return of Kong, Pre-Production, Part 2: Countdown to Filming, The Venture Journey, Return to Skull Island, New York, New Zealand, Bringing Kong to Life, Part 1: Design and Research, Bringing Kong to Life, Part 2: Performance and Animation), 5 video galleries (The 1996 King Kong, The Venture, Skull Island, New York, Kong), 5 Pre-Viz Animatics (Arrival at Skull Island, Bronto Stampede, T-Rex Fight, Kong's Capture, Empire State Building Battle), 3 Motion-Capture/Animation Comparisons (Ann Disarms Kong, Kong's Capture, Kong in New York), DVD credits, the 1996 and 2005 screenplays (via DVD-ROM) and more

In addition, as we mentioned earlier, you'll be able to purchase the same 3-disc set in a King Kong: Deluxe Extended Limited Edition DVD Gift Set (SRP $79.98) in collectible packaging, which will also include "A beautifully crafted King Kong figurine, created exclusively for the package by the Oscar-winning artists at Weta Workshop and Weta Digital, the company responsible for the film's creature design, special makeups, miniatures and dazzling visual effects." Here's a look at the DVD cover artwork for the King Kong: Deluxe Extended Edition and also the new figurine that will be found in the Gift Set...

Looking at the picture & taking into account the "collectible packaging" I think the dvd set will slip into the middle of the Empire State building.

The R2 Version is up for pre-order at £17.99 on Play.com so thats not a bad price really, dunno what prices you will get for the R1 version anywhere though, but it seems all the special features will be the same, so I dont think it matters what you go for.

No sign of the Gift Set at Play.com though. I wonder if that will get a R2 release and if so how much will that be?

I am pretty sure that the $80 gift set will not be £17.99

^ well I didnt realise thats what you wanted, did I

And Seriously, you will be lucky to get that gift set for £20 or less, cant really see that happening, unless you wait a few years until one maybe appears in a bargain bin???
Also I assume this gift set is only appearing on R1, so trying to wait for a decent price on it could mean you really will be waiting ages. I'm just going to go for the normal packaging on the extended edition, cant be bothered to pay more for the gift set even though I agree it does look good.

Gift Set in UK R2 is an HMV Exclusive. Cardboard box plus statue plus the 3 disk. However the DVD are not in 3 amarays a la the standard 3 disk - they are in a bizarre 1 disk - 2 disk overlap combo box.

No insert either - does the standard 3 disk come with an insert?

I didn't know this was coming out, and nobody has been talking about it, so I was surprised to see it in the shops. I took the display amaray to the counter, and was shocked to discover it's a great big brick of 3 amarays! How cheap is that? I don't have space on my shelf for that. Why put disc one and two in separate cases?? Cheap and ugly.

Since I've read no reviews it was a blind buy. I've no idea if the special features are "featuretty" or genuinely useful, or if the extra scenes in the film are worth it. I'll find time to watch it today.
