Once Upon a Time in the West

Bought this for �8.99 from Play.com, and after seeing Once Upon a Time in America I really wanted to indulge in more Leone.

It's excellent, very slow but in the end rewarding. I didn't like it much for the first 30 minutes, but Bronson and Fonda soon lifted the film; along with some superb direction (i.e. the crane shot towards the beginning at the train station

) from one of cinema's greatest auteurs.

Claudia Cardinale also added some great eye candy!

yeah i thought it was very slow and boring when i first saw it. But i was about 12 at the time.

One of my favs now. Yes that train station shot is one of the best IMO !

It is a truly fantastic movie. The final confrontation between Fonda and Bronson is brilliant, with the flashback and Ennio Morricone's haunting score.

One of the best opening sequences of any western, in fact any movie. It's balletic, poetry in motion, so damned beautiful! Trust me, you'll grow to love it, especially if you get to know more westerns.

Now for A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, the incredible The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, and the much under-rated A Fistful of Dynamite eh Rik?

I know people say this is the best western ever but imo it's one of the worst, apart from the opening scene and of course Morricones soundtrack which was fantastic.

I think Leone far surpassed it with the "The Man with No Name Trilogy" and I'd rank Young Guns, Tombstone and all of Clints westerns over this.

This film is absolutely perfect, seen it so many times yet the end still sends shivers down my spine. Awesome piece of film making, and the picture quality on the dvd is stunning considering its age.

Once Upon A Time in the West is (in my opinion) a masterpiece of the genre. Bought it blind after loving the dollars trilogy (which in turn I began wathcing after loving Peckinpah's 'The Wild Bunch) and it just blew me away with its beauty, its story telling to its fantastical score. I heartily recomend this to anyone approaching the genre or anyone whoo just wants to see a great film (its in my top 5 fave films)
