Bullitt R1 vs R2

Is there any reason I should choose one region over another for the Bullitt SE? Didn't get round to buying the R1 immediately and now that R2 is out I wondered if there were any differences (PQ-wise - the content appears to be identical).

I'm not bothered by/about PAL speedup but one thing I think about when looking at identical versions is the source master - is the R2 Bullitt sourced from a PAL master or converted from NTSC?

Can anyone kindly tell me how the new dvd of The Getaway compares to the old in terms of picture quality; is it significantly superior? I've naturally read the review by Mike on Dvd Times, but could do with a further push to buy the new dvd! I take it the mono audio is the same as before?

bes

Check John H's quotes from and links to the Laser Examiner on page 2. Everything you need is there. That site is probably the best around for technical details on dvd picture and sound quality.

Is there any chance of McQueen's much-bashed An Enemy of the People making an appearance on DVD? I'm quite curious to see it.

I don't honestly know; it bombed, as you know, and there are few posts such as yours around the 'net, so Warners probably have doubts about the commercial viability of a release, but who's to say it won't?

It has appeared (unhappily in p&s) on Sky Cinema (last time was about three years ago I think). From memory, McQueen is quite decent in it - I must admit, I'm curious to see it again also.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for a satellite showing then.

Quick heads up; I've got fond memories of being introduced to McQueen in Wanted Dead Or Alive and the first volume of this TV series - a nine disc set - is set for release in R2 next month.

A bit of shameless self-promotion; I've tapped in some thoughts on Le Mans and Junior Bonner, at my Film Journal Blog here if anyone's interested.

Some nice thoughts on Le Mans, John. I admit, after ploughing my way through a couple of McQueen bios I wanted another look at it and shelled out for the R1 last month.

As you say, it's quite fascinating as a time capsule, and there's something about its unrelenting, spartan dourness that's appealing, in a brutish, grey way.

After reading a few of Steve's books i reckon there must be a large amount of footage from Le Mans hidden in a vault somewhere. Its a real shame the dvd release never had any extras.
I'm sure i read he was not happy with the finished product, it would have be nice to get an insight into his vision a little more.

McQueen's cut ran over 3 hours or something silly like that. I seem to remember something about his original plan was for it to be realtime, or near enough.

The Cincinati Kid R2

Can anyone with the R2 version of the Essential Steve McQueen collection confirm the extras on The Cincinnati Kid disc please? All the articles I've read suggest it is the same as the R1 (Norman Jewison commentary, scene specific commentary from Phil Gordon and Dave Foley and a featurette). The boxset I received from HMV yesterday however, only included the featurette.
