Ta for the link - the prices aren't bad. I picked up the BU from Planet Axel (Music) for around 16 euros - that's excluding delivery costs - so it would have worked out a bit cheaper from these guys.

It's sad really because Arrow's heart is obviously in the right place with these releases. They can't be making a lot out of them, financially. It is a shame then, as a supplier of niche films like these, that they don't cater more for the purist, otherwise just who is going to buy them?

The majority will never even look twice, so you need to keep your small potential market happy, which is obviously not happening with these continual smeary, dnr-ed monstrosities.

Cheers for the link, 'neph. Not heard of them before, but if they're tried and tested by your good self then might have to give 'em a go.

That site seems a bit fussy, they won't accept my credit card details for some reason!

It's run by the same people who run the Book Depository, so it's fairly trustworthy.

Yup, and they take Paypal which is terrific. Noticed their prices are generally about the same as Amazon Marketplace, only without the Amazon P&P charge on top.

Hmmm, I've used the Book Depository before no probs, with the same card and not that long back either (xmas), but here I get this:

"The card you have provided has been declined by provider, please check your details or try another"

It's a shame, I really wanted them to do well when they first appeared. I paid over the odds for the first few things I bought from them, just to support them. Lesson learnt, I'm afraid. Its not really their fault with 'Bird...' but that aspect ratio is going to kill the film.

Well, I just received a refund and cancellation email from them - seems they can't get the item for whatever reason.

Not exactly an auspicious start.

Thankfully they came through with a copy of Santa Sangre for me, but the slipcase is a tad tatty. It looks like shelf wear (although the blu inside is still factory sealed).

They seem to be able to get this now. I've just had a shipped notice.

Arrow have seriously screwed up Bird With the Crystal Plumage. I'd never seen the film before even though wanting to, and was willing to come to the Arrow disc with an open mind until I saw the utter mess of the DVD Beaver comparison pics.

Thankfully I managed to get one of of the last BU Blu Rays last night before they all sold out. It's a blind purchase, but even if I don't like it I'm sure many will want to buy it off me instead of suffering the Arrow version.

Why Arrow couldn't have paid to use a copy of the existing US HD master in the correct ratio, I have no idea. If that really wasn't an option, they should have used the release slot and extras budget for something that was up to scratch for HD release in the meantime. A niche distributer alienating a niche audience... I was even willing to cut them some slack over previous issues which I'm sure everyone will agree are minor when compared to the monumental mess of the Plumage release.

I'm sure you won't lose money on that Blue Underground disc. It's a cracking little film, though, one of the Argento's best.

It's a shame that Arrow have messed this one up. They should have steered well clear of it as soon as they realised Storraro was involved. I wonder what sort of contract they signed? It's odd, because them and Blue Underground share the rights on so many films, they must have signed something a bit strange to make their version the only one available. Total balls up.

So, the BU version turned up this morning. Haven't seen the film for years, which version should I watch tonight?

If you mean Deep Red, I prefer the shorter cut.

Ha! The "extras budget" as you put it is so slim I work two other jobs. So please don't kid yourself on that front That would make no difference to anything.

As for the ratio - yes it's a great shame but all other European releases of Bird are going to be in the Storaro format. Unfortunately he has now supplied the master that company's licensing this title have to work from. BU's sterling disc was released a while ago.

Do they pay by the minute? That must be why the credits are so long! Actually I enjoy the animations on the discs I've seen so far, but they could be a little shorter. Just saying...
