Exclamation Arrow to release Argentos including Inferno and Deep Red on DVD and Blu-ray in August

Inferno and Deep Red are coming to DVD and Blu-ray on 2nd August in the UK. Play already has them up with what looks like temporary artwork but with extra features listed:

Inferno

Deep Red

And, according to this thread at Cult Movie Forums, the following are coming out via Arrow in the weeks after that on DVD and Blu-ray:

Phenomena
The Cat O'Nine Tails
The Bird With The Crystal Plumage
Demons [DVD only]
Demons 2 [DVD only]

The Italian R2 DVD release of Inferno is excellent.

But yeah, the Blu Ray should look better.

Just a shame that even though I'll be looking to buy some of these on Blu Ray that I can't have his masterpiece Suspiria to go with them because it was botched.

Yeah, I thought I'd give the Suspiria blu another spin just for good measure. Not a fan. The academy looks like a nightclub for the most part.

Shame, but the R1 AB upscales quite nicely, even if the 5.1 is botched. Then again, the complete Nouveaux remix is in need of careful treble reduction - it's a harsh, fatiguing and overly boosted track imo.

I'm just praying they don't mess up Inferno. I love that picture.

I'm guessing the only niggle could be the potential removal of the cat/mouse sequence. I'm hoping it is retained, but if not, I'll still happily pick up the disc.

Oh no, I'd forgotten about that. And then there's the lizard sequence in Deep Red. Maybe these are dual efforts with Blue Underground like City Of The Living Dead, in which case there would be no worries as they'd be uncut in the U.S.

I'm thinking Arrow could adopt that as their company mission statement.

come on, do Opera next.

And don't forget to put a half naked, badly drawn woman on the cover

Forgot about the animal scenes (one is a completely natural event anyway- cats kill mice, always have, always will). What a shame, I can't see the BBFC passing these uncut they usually hide behind legislation (which is not going to prevent this sort of thing happening anyway) in these cases. All the more reason to release something exclusive like Opera!

Losing the cat/mouse sequence will not harm the film imo, but I'm not sure how easily it can removed without noticeably chopping up Emerson's big theme track.

Removing Deep Red's pinned lizard will be an easier task.

Lots of animal snuff in 70s/80s Italian cinema, I'm thinking.

In terms of plot you could lose the cat/mouse shot from Inferno easily, but the lizard shot from Deep Red would be a problem. I first saw the 1993 Redemption VHS, I had absolutely no idea why the father was suddenly calling the girl evil because the lizard shot was completely missing.

I don't understand what good it would do to remove a shot from a 35 year old film like that, it's not going to bring the lizard back from the dead or prevent other film makers from harming animals, and when you compare it to most of the disgusting animal cruelty scenes in trashier Italian fims it's very tame. It seems that no one wins, the fans are not happy and the BBFC have achieved nothing. Take Oldboy as an example, that got through on a technicality (the act didn't cover octopi) so the BBFC were happy to pass it.

Why not? Sending out a signal that it's not acceptable for the sake of entertainment must have some effect. You can argue the toss about the impact of releasing older movies where something happened decades ago, but the reality is that you have to be consistent. Otherwise the law becomes meaningless: "Oh, this was filmed 9 months ago? That's alright, it's already happened!"

But you can harm an octopus on a technicality? All that sends out is a message that it's okay to harm some creatures and not others and yes, the law does become meaningless.

It's the retrospective censorship of animal cruelty that's the problem.

According to the folk at cult labs, Deep Red won't be on Blu

Yeah, I just read that too. My initial reaction is no blu, no purchase, particularly as the film will likely be cut as well. I'll probably wait for a blu release elsewhere unless the Arrow set throws up some surprises.
