Apache Username/Password to PHP

I am working in a virtual machine running Ubuntu server trying to get my ideal NAS setup working.

I have all the servers running now and have used mod_proxy to make all the servers sub-directories of the server (so http://server/service instead of http://server:9090) but now I would like to be able to log in once (using basic authentication) and have the username and password either pre-populated in the login screens of each additional service or perhaps passed to their respective login scripts.

How do I go about capturing the variables for username and password from the basic authentication login box into a PHP script?

This is all going to be sat behind my router so security is not really a problem, it will also be setup to reject all traffic that does not originate from my network address (192.168.178.*).
