Half Life 2 - the absoloute best game ever?

I'm about 2/3rds through half life 2 and just wanted to say how absoloutly stunningly brilliant this is. The makers got slated for taking so long, but i'll happily wait another five years for the follow up if its as good. The problem is, what does this do to the market? ANY game i play after Half Life is gonna be awful in comparison - in fact, i feel like it can only be down hill from now.

Anyway - back to the original point - this game is incredible, an absoloutly perfect 100/100. Is there anyone in the world that didn't like this game, or wasnt as totally blown away by it?

Xenole gave Oxygen 3 out of 10.

P.S. The only game that is comparable is Resident Evil 4. Play that next.

I think HL2 as a package is certainly the BEST GAME EVER. When I say "package" I mean the combination of graphics, sounds, gameplay and, of course, multiplayer with the stunning CS:S and soon to be released DoD:S.

I wouldn't call it the best for gameplay ever though as I'm sure Tetris was better

Yeah it was good but could have been better.

For me personally, HL had more of an impact when it came out because it had a more rounded story-line and was therefore a more immersive experience. Always had the feeling with HL2 that they never intended to give much of the storyline away so we'd stay hungry for the add-on packs

I really enjoyed Half Life 2 (I could argue that Far Cry had some nicer scenery)

If I had to be picky, it would have been nice if the game was not quite so "On The Rails" as it were, so you were more in a world and had to solve things, get things done (like a zelda is) rather than have to follow a preset path throughout the whole game.

On the Subject of HalfLife.

I now have a new soundcard with a fresh halflife2 from steam, and I'm getting the sound stuttering bug, where at times the game freezes and the sound sticks in a loop for a few seconds.

I know this is a common issue, does anyone know a fix?

Audigy2 ZS sound card.

Thanks for that.
So many people are trying so many things to get rid of the little stutter every now and again.

Just has a play and it's not (as few seconds) it's only like 1/2 a second at various times, it just sticks and the sound loops.

I've started it again, and yes I agree with you, it is dull looking.
The original was (I feel) the nicer game.

There are/were parts of HL2 that I really enjoyed, but there were many parts I really didin't like.
The storyline is good, it's just a bit gutty the same old buildings/scenery all the time....

The Buggy levels were my favorites.

I think HL2 is cerainly the best fps out there, but it's crown of best overall game has been stolen by Res Evil 4.

I've finally completed the game after I have had the game since release date (delay is due to projects and exams).

It is an amazing game from start to finish, unlike the first game's last section. I am a little confused about the ending though, might need to play the end again to understand.

You mention sounds, assuming this applies to ingame music as well... Unless I've forgotten(!), I haven't played the game in a while now but I recall thinking to myself while I was- "hmmm, there doesn't appear to be any 'proper' music/sound appears to have been a rush job to get it out there"

From what I remember theres not really any decent music, just a thumping "dance" like tune everytime action is about to heat up. Maybe there was more music but I just never noticed it.

I wouldn't say it was the best game ever, however it's certainly a very, very impressive one. I've not completed it yet, but it started off fantasticly, getting of the train thing then being directed about by combine/interacting with stuff, then being chased on roof tops etc.. Then all of a sudden just changed into a typical follow the path, shoot, shoot, shoot kind of thing with a couple of (fun!) puzzles thrown in.

It was worth the wait though

I'm enjoying it, and I think graphically it's a major evolutionay step, especially the facial animation. But it still 'feel' and 'plays' like any other FPS - sure the physics is pretty smart but the puzzles where you have to move stuff are really no different to say Jedi Knight - except the objects react 'realistically' instead of being on rails. It certaintly hasn't blown me away, and it's no major revolution in gaming, then again few games do these days: Beyond Good and Evil and Planescape Torment were the last ones.

I go through phases with HL2... sometimes I think its stunning then I think its ok....

sometimes you actually forget its an immersive expereince that is made to make you think.... its like life....sometimes its exciting, boring, funny, irrational - but ultimately involving ....

a slam bang game thats only action form beginning to end, is often boring because the surprise element disappears....

the beauty of HL2 is that it's visuals, sound etc (all viewed at high res) are great...all adding to the reality...

I'd say it's a 9/10 game....not a 10/10...

But i cant wait for F.E.A.R

Heh, you just need the GFX card - I need the whole damn PC to play it on as my laptop keeps overheating and this would kill it in a second

What spec's does HL2 reasonable need to be playable?
