Arrow Mallrats SE Dvd out in 2005 (With Easter Egg Details)

http://dvd.ign.com/articles/572/572180p1.html

Looks like Kevin Smith's next special edition DVD will be Mallrats. At a recent "An Evening With Kevin Smith" show, he confirmed that the DVD is no longer available because Universal is planning a 10th anniversary edition next year.

Some fans suggested on his View Askew message boards that, in honor of the 10th anniversary of the film they gather at the Eden Prairie, Minn. mall where the movie was filled. In response, Smith posted the following:

"So funny that you mention this, because I just went into Universal yesterday to work out the details of the Mallrats 10th Anniversary Edition DVD. We were talking about doing another ArcLight Screening/Q&A which we'd shoot out here in L.A., but as I was driving home, I was thinking "Maybe we can go to the Eden Prairie Mall and hold the screening/Q&A..."

If it's anything like Clerks X, it'll be a good disc.

My favourite Kevin Smith movie... although I normally loathe to replace good discs with SE's I guess I'll have to shell out for these (Chasing Amy next?)

I'm confused as to what they could add. The existing has video commentary, deleted scenes, documentary, trailers, music videos etc etc etc.

Is the picture quality going to be any better? The only DVD copy of it I ever saw (can't remember which it was) was very poor.

The quality wasn't great before, bit grainy, but it didn't look like the compression was that great either (considering the existing disc came out in '97 or '98 I think it holds up pretty good considering how much is on there.)

Very handy for those of us who have'nt gotten Mallrats yet, not so good for those who have. I'll have to replace chasing amy/dogma at some point though with their eventual special editions

They better keep all the old extras on this. Having said that though I can't really think what they could add.

It's not spot on actually. It's badly misframed in the cropping, some shots only dipict the actors talking from the nose down. Poor effort from Criterion.

i was going to mention the cropping, but to be fair it isn't criterion's fault, it's buena vista's.
criterion got the cropping perfect, and it was approved by the cinematographer, on the laserdisc version. when they asked buena vista for the materials for a new dvd release they had to re-transfer it. they passed it on to criterion, again claiming it was approved but it was a different - misframed - transfer.
though i was always surprised criterion didn't demand a fresh transfer and re-issue it, they've done re-issues over much smaller errors than that.

i don't know what they could add to mallrats - save a better transfer (nice but not essential) and new commentaries (which i'm sure will happen) but i'll still pick it up i'd imagine. now dogma - the R1 SE - if they can find any way to genuinely improve on that, - i'll be impressed.

Well they could put the missing documentry on it (the one they put on the "Vulgar" DVD when the legal stuff had been sorted out). Apart from that though I can't think of much else

whoa, what's all this about "Chasing Amy" having been misframed all this time? I better dig it out and take another look!

This was always my least favourite Kevin Smith film but i always thought the current r2 was pretty packed. I wish they would bring out a proper R2 of Dogma.

After watching Smith's first 3 films again recently I found that I liked Mallrats more than Chasing Amy, whereas is used to be the other way round after I first watched them both.

Doubt I'll pick this up though unless it's stunningly better than my current R1 CE.
