The Pirate

Just noticed that one of my all time personal favourites, "The Pirate" is on TCM this afternoon at 5.10pm.

Well worth catching if you can. Gene Kelly on absolute top form, Judy Garland looking like she's actually having tons of fun, a really silly but wonderfully entertaining story, Cole Porter songs and great Technicolor photography. You can't go wrong really!

Why oh why is this not on dvd yet?!

A lovely film and somewhat underrated at present. We need a Vincente Minnelli boxset and we need it now - and "The Sandpiper" had better be there!

We know that Easter Parade is coming out on region 1 next March/April. What's the betting Warners will do the same as they did this year and release a handful of other Judy Garland titles as well. Summer Stock and The Pirate have to be very strong contenders if this were the case.

I don't recall a pirate film starring Gene Kelly but I would like to know the name of a film where Burt Lancaster plays a Pirate. He has a bearded mute as a sidekick in it.

Based on the caps (which we know sometimes look nothing like the actual transfers) I'd be plenty worried about the color - this film is one of the most spectacular Tech films ever and those caps are brown, lifeless, flat, Eastmancolor CRI or faded interneg - hoping that the actual DVD looks better. Having just seen his caps for the Joan Collins set and him proclaiming that The Girl In The Red Velvet Swing looks slightly faded (which it does in the caps) and then actually watching what is virtually a perfect color transfer, well, it's a real crapshoot over there. I'll post my thoughts when the DVD arrives.

It's part of the Classic Musicals set from Warner coming next week. Other titles are That's Dancing (85), Royal Wedding (51), The Belle of New York (52), Words and Music (48), The Toast of New Orleans (50) and That Midnight Kiss (49). The announcement was posted on this Forum several months ago.

There's also a dedicated thread to both 'Dream Factory' box set releases here.

I think that's why I keep missing things you know, there are so many threads for collections (that I may not think to look twice at) and whole genres where I might only be interested in a single title (and often by the time I'm aware the thread has moved on so it's not readily apparent)!
That's my excuse anyway!
