Visconti's "The Damned" - is it on DVD?

I've not seen this before, and it's showing on BBC4 this weekend. Is there a DVD anywhere or should I make and keep a tape copy?

It's available at www.dvd.it

A little steep at €23.49, especially when you consider the customer feedback...

La Caduta degli dei is one of Visconti's great films and it certainly deserves a much better transfer than this Instituto Luce DVD release. This is rather surprising, given Instituto Luce's usual dedication to cinema, and the 1.33 aspect ratio does not represent its original theatrical release. This is unfortunate, especially after the exceptional DVD treatment of Visconti's masterpiece, Il Gattopardo by Medusa.
That completely put me off buying it.

Thanks, Bilto. I think I'll wait. The Damned was on video in the UK, but it's now deleted.

I've just noticed that the BBC4 broadcast clashes with the documentary on Straw Dogs on Channel 4. It'll have to be the documentary, I guess, as I'll have fewer chances of seeing it again. Decisions, decisions...

Good stuff Gary... I think I'll get someone to record the Straw Dogs documentary too. I'll be recording The Damned for sure!

Thanks for the info!

Fortunately BBC4 is showing The Damned in widescreen, unlike the Italian DVD. A fascinating film, well worth seeing. Dirk Bogarde is great as always but it's a pity he doesn't have more sreen time.

I'm taping it now (fingers crossed). Despite the Radio Times and the BBC4 continuity announcer saying it's dubbed into English, the print they're showing is Italian-language with English subtitles. It is in widescreen.

Not that I was too bothered about the dubbing - as far as I know this is one of those international coproductions where everyone spoke their own language on set and the film was dubbed accordingly for whichever language version was being produced. Bogarde and Rampling would have spoken their lines in English, for example.
