The Prowler/ Shock Waves/ Toolbox Murders

Blue Underground (William Lustig's new distribution company) are releasing this trio on September 3rd - can't wait for The Prowler - some of Tom Savini's best work is in that film.

Toolbox Murders is rubbish IMO, but I haven't seen Shock Waves. Has anyone else seen this?

Shock Waves is a surprisingly good zombie film. The cast which includes Brooke Adams, John Carradine and Peter Cushing lent it some class. I loved the look of the zombies in this one - they are a bit unique. It is worth a look.

I have yet to see The Prowler and I agree that The Toolbox Murders is not very good.

Another review for Shock Waves, a minor genre classic IMO. Not that you need trouble yourself with it now this R1 disc is coming out, but the R2 Vipco disc is without a doubt one of the shoddiest DVDs I’ve ever clapped eyes on.

5 years late!

I have two of these (Shock Waves and The Prowler) and think they are great examples of how to do things right with horror films.

'Shock Waves' exchanges the usual gore and sleaze of the 1970s for some incredibly creepy atmosphere, while 'The Prowler' shows that slasher films can be both gory and scary, and they don't seen to be self-referential or comic, unlike all the modern efforts.
Both of them are freshly reviewed at my site: Shock Waves and The Prowler.

I'm tempted by 'Toolbox Murders' because it stars Cameron Mitchell. Is it as bad as they say (or bad in an entertaining way!)?

It's like a made-for-TV movie but with added gore. Quite sleazy, and Cameron Mitchell overacts quite a bit, especially near the end, but I did rather enjoy it. Thanks for resurrecting my thread!

(And I still haven't seen Shock Waves!)

I find The Prowler mind-numbingly tedious, myself, outside of the kills. It's banal even for a cheap slasher.

Did you go in expecting an all out slasher-fest? If you watch it expecting more of a 'serious' horror film, then you might enjoy it more.

Um, "serious"? How so? The stuff between kills only exists to fluff out the running time, and as such it doesn't pass muster as padding even for this kind of cheap slasher.

The Prowler is indeed a terribly paced, plodding film without replay value. It starts off intriguingly enough but the plot such as it is, is uninteresting and there is no characterisation to speak of. It's worth watching once to see the nasty carnage, but even that goes on a bit at times; the swimming pool throat slashing murder lasts about 3 days.

Is the Toolbox Murders coming out on R2? I wonder will it still be cut?

The Toolbox Murders doesn't cotravene any current BBFC guidelines; there's nothing to cut [and the naked nail gun murder isn't even graphic]. Zone Horror have shown it uncut too. An enjoyably deranged load of old cobblers with Cameron Mitchell on fine crazed form.
