MS Word - help with simple formatting

Anyone a whizz with Word ? This is one of those minor but annoying things ...

This is simply a border/shading around the row of text.
The grey highlight shows the 'Spacing' setting at 6pt for before & after.
But notice how the space under the D is larger than the space above it.
I guess that is to allow for hanging letters (the 'p') in the font.
Is there a simple way to add a little more spacing, without bothering with those movable text box things?

For that level of accuracy, you're better off creating a shaded box, and a textbox, both of which you can move with pixel accuracy. With 'add space before' and 'after' in the paragraph options, that doesn't do much to the 'padding' within the box. Once you've positioned the boxes, you can group them if you need to move them later on.
