There was always a scene on LV426 at the beginning (inside - people talking about checking a grid reference and some kids messing about - one on a tricycle) but the Directors Cut extended it to show what happened outside.

Psycho
No I don't think even that scene was in there.

That's odd. I always thought that one was or at least I have a strong memory of the child on the tricycle or some shots of the inside of the buildings on LV426, maybe not as much dialog?

I will have to check, but if memory serves I don't think any scenes of the colonists before they arrive exist in the theatrical version.

There’s no shots of Hadley’s Hope in the Theatrical Cut

Yep, I'm wrong:

I thought there was the initial bit up to the Weyland-Yutani-logo and then the next bit was new.

If it's any consolation, I share your false memory.

The extra scenes in question - as well as some scenes like Bishop being attacked through a hole in the pipe he crawls through, and concepts never used like smaller albino Alien drones - were included in the novelisation by Alan Dean Foster. That might be why any memories of the Special Edition scenes seem older than they are?

There are some deleted scenes on the DVD (I think) and definitely on the bluray, including the Burke cocoon scene, but I think it only amounts to a few minutes of cut stuff.

I recently saw both films for the upteenth time but on this occasion bearing the question of the OP in mind. Overall, I felt that Alien has aged better. With the exception of the computer screens and controls, Ridley Scott made the setting inside the Nostromo futuristic enough to be convincing even 41 years later. The fact that the interior of the Sulaco in Aliens is less elaborate perhaps gives the game away a bit more these days. The same thing applies to the interior of the Acheron colony structures. Cameron IMO has made the sets a bit too functional looking and so looking at them today they do not appear as though they are so far ahead in the future.

They're completely different films in my opinion, the singular Alien and Ripley character being the only similarity.

They're both great on their own.
