two hornets scrapping by my house this morning, moving v fast so hard to get good pics, quite brutal as the one underneath is eventually chewed in half.

Haven't been out in the wild, talking pictures of wildlife, much lately but just grabbed a couple of days in sunny Dorset. Especially happy to catch this treecreeper trying to hide on a gorse bush. Never seen a treecreeper in gorse before. No Dartfor Warblers though, despite a 5am start to beat the heat.

Yes, very nice DY. I was in Dorset the other week too and had a great time, though I didn't take my SLR with me, just a compact and my little camcorder. Didn't have much luck with the terns on Brownsea, the hides were full of horseflies and they wouldn't leave me alone so I didn't hang about but did see the Red Squirrels and lots of dragonflies (Four Spotted Chasers and Black-tailed Skimmers) and plenty of Five Spot Burnet Moths. I also got to spend some time watching two Weasels and Spotted Flycatchers at Corfe Castle, which was really great as those are firm favourites of mine... and my brother, who was green about missing the weasels!

I have a few photos but am thinking of stopping using flickr after they completely screwed up the interface so can't post them. I've put a few on ipernity to try out but I don't think you can actually use that site as a source to embed images. This is a link to the ones I've put on there though:

DY - superb photos from you all over this thread, clearly you are spending a lot of time getting some great pictures. Well done

Nothing like the quality of other photos in here, but here is a juvenile Green Woodpecker that has been a regular visitor to our garden over the last few weeks. Had to take the shot through glass as they are easily scared.

Quick aside, what's a good lens for birding that's under £500? Nikon 300mm f/4? 80-400mm?

Excellent! I'd be over the moon if we had a Yaffle in the garden. They are really timid, it's great when you see them trying to hide and peeking around a tree trunk.

No recommendations for Nikon lenses sorry Boink. I use a 200mm canon L with a 2x extender FWIW.

Lots of Red Kites went over today while working in the garden, only when they are low you realise how ******* huge they are

forgot about this pic of a Little Owl I had on the camera from work a few weeks ago, looked too dark but after a bit of tweaking it looks great, clearing trees at work and was sitting quite close as long as I stayed on the machines.
