The first one looks very good for the most part. There was on scene which stood out as being overly grainy - I think it was when razor-guy got killed.

Likewise, you failed to notice the new transfer's clear drop in detail, so it's probably best to take your observations with a pinch of salt.

I haven't seen the new transfer in action but judging by screenshots you aren't losing any fine detail.

I'm not making anything up. Life's too short? Obviously not for those who obsess over such matters of monumental importance as DNR and grain etc.

People convince themselves that AVC is somehow a miracle codec that produces identical video indistinguishable from the original master, but the fact is it is merely more efficient, it offers no overall quality improvement when dealing with movies of this length and as soon as you compress you lose quality. All codecs have their own limitations in this regard.

I decided to order the old release after reading through all this, before it goes OOP (see some marketplace sellers already putting the price up as well). The new version doesn't seem like it's worth getting excited over.

at the direction this thread has gone down. We should be uniting to fight the DNR menace, not arguing about the ******* compression greeblies on the old Predator disc. [Rex Kramer]That's just what they'll be expecting us to do...[/Rex Kramer]

Having seen this new version, I can confirm it really is appalling. Yes it might be higher res than DVD etc. but there is just no detail to anything. Looking at peoples faces should reveal pores in the skin etc. but it's like they are caked in wax, truly truly awful.

Predator 1 & 2 blu ray set (including original BD release) currently selling for less than the price of the Ultimate Hunter Edition at both Play and Amazon.

Get 'em while they're hot and all that...

The old version is ok and still better than the DVD. I have the DVD versions and still might upgrade to the old versions.

Not chosen well screenshots but here are the two films compared with the DVD.

Predator

Predator 2
