I'm a little scared to get involved in this geekfest of anality, but for what it's worth, I've got the original release and it's nice. Not perfect or demo quality by any stretch, but still considerably better than the DVD. I won't be double-dipping.

As someone who didn't get the original release and held out, i like all the screenshots bar one (the photoshopped looking one with arnie in the red shirt) i will borrow this before a perchase

I really think this looks good, though not that different from the previous version really. Reduced grain is fine if it keeps the existing detail (which is seems to from the screenshots) However, that Arnie red shirt shot does look mental I cannot believe some of the comments on this thread though, some people are acting like it's a horrendous release, almost unwatchable

We sit about 7 1/2 ft away from a 50" display. HD can look amazing. Upscaled SD often looks good too, though I tend to drop the sharpness setting into the negative when viewing rougher material.

Yeah my sharpness is as low as it will go. Does help with overly-edge enhanced DVD's from the distance we watch from. Serious question - is there a 'sweet spot' in terms of distances? I guess it varies depending on the quality of your eye-sight.

7.5 feet does seem close to me. Don't you feel the heat of the display? I can see why you notice every defect at that distance though.

There's a THX viewing chart doing the rounds which offers distances based on the "recreation of an immersive cinematic experience"!

It states 5' - 7.5' is ideal for a 50" screen. Many manufacturers and retailers recommend 6' - 12' for the same screen size, so... Certainly I wouldn't want to be much closer to the display than I am.

This is all at 1080p, mind, so dropping a ft or two might strike a good balance between genuinely detailed HD and artefact-ridden upscaled SD.

Tempted to pre-order, but I'm sure it'll be in the 2 for Ł20 deals before long.

Didn't realise though it was being released so soon, thought I read somewhere (in this thread, I think) that it was August.

Having just seen these comparison pictures myself, I'll be steering clear of this release and maybe picking up the old one cheap or just watching my special edition DVD now and again.

Way to go fox on ramping up that DNR dial to make things look better!

Looks like there is a new version of Predator 2 too. No idea if it is just the current version repackaged.

Did you miss the reviewers conclusion:

Conclusion
Make no mistake, Predator has never looked so good. All the grain and dust has been completely removed from the entire movie. The picture quality is crisp and clear throughout. No doubt there will be some people criticizing the new transfer for the sake of it but Predator will never look as good as this. I definitely recommend buying this version if you have the older DVD or first Blu-Ray release.

I really like what they've done!

They seem to have removed the grain but kept almost all of the detail. Any of the detail that has been removed was hidden in the grain or the original release, so you couldn't really see it anyway.

If you take the Gladiator release, then you can clearly see detail, even complete objects (arrows), had been removed. I wasn't happy with that and didn't buy it. I've got my fingers crossed the re-release is better.

That waxy shot of Arnold at the start does look nasty, but frankly the rest of the grabs of the new transfer look much better.

There's even more detail in the shot of Anna’s face!

You can see a slight line to the right of the original screen grab (print damage?) but on the new one the line is very obvious.

Probably not the best example, I'm sure they could have cleaned it up, but you can see it was there on the original as well.

I agree, that is the only one I'm not keen on... but how long is that shot in the film? I can live with that.

I saw the conclusion but thought it was probably somewhat biased because this review is coming from an alien/predator fansite

Looks a lot better to me. As mentioned, they seem to have retained the detail yet eliminated the grain. Interesting.
