When the US Manhunter was released as part of the Hannibal Trilogy set, although the oldest movie it was clear it was much the best transfer of the three; but it was not thought to be a particularly good transfer, but great to have it on HD. However in the two years or so since and with the accumulating botch jobs on catalogue titles it is now being seen as actually a pretty good transfer and probably one that is very close to how it was seen theatrically. Even though it is strictly bare-bones, it's certainly to be preferred to the UK release.

Someone just sent me a free copy of Manhunter on Blu-Ray!

Very odd... unless I ordered it while drunk one night.

EDIT: I think it was a Dog Ate My Wookie competition! Thanks!

Just watched it and really enjoyed it!

It's been a while since I last saw it - probably in the 90s on Videdrome. I don't remember thinking much of it back that but that have been due to my age at the time - mid-teens.

I know I came to the conclusion that the US Blu-Ray would be the better version to watch picture wise but I've got to say that I had no issues with the UK version. Yep, side-by-side the US version looks better due to the film grain but when you watch the UK version on it's own then you don't really notice the DNR... well, I didn't.

Also, something else I noticed... Barny from The Silence of The Lambs, Hannibal and Red Dragon was in Manhunter!

Nothing new to say really, but I just watched the US Region-ALL Blu-ray on my projector set up and I have to reiterate that it has a really fantastic transfer. One of the best looking 80s films on Blu-ray in fact!

If you love the film as much as I do then I must urge you to go with the US BD over the DNR'd UK release. It's also only £10.75 delivered from PlanetAxel at the moment because of their (temporary) free shipping deal. I got my copy in 4 days as well!

Not only is the UK one visibly DNR'ed, it's had some overzealous (and totally unnecessary) dirt removal too: http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...ess=#vergleich

Beg, steal or borrow, just get the US one.

Blu-ray/DVD mastering falls into the 'set and forget' mentality far too often, usually for one reason: money, more specifically the lack thereof. It's quicker, easier and cheaper to run an automated dirt removal pass than it is to go through the film frame by frame and paint out any artefacts.

Recieved yesterday and watched it today. Thought it was a great film, an actors movie. Suprised by how little violence there is in the film considering its an 18 cert over here not that its a bad thing
Great transfer aswell, cant for the life of me see why the uk release needed DNR adding and did'nt think the film looked overly grainey at all or any grain for that matter.

Optimum for you, they're a bunch of idiots who seem to just give every master handed to them a noise/dirt removal pass of some sort or the other "just in case", even if those masters were of a very high standard in the first place. They've done the same with their Studio Ghibli releases.
