does every zombie apocalypse story start with the protagonist awaking from a coma in a hospital to find the world has ended? was this a tongue in cheek homage to the cliche or did the graphic novel do it first, as it seems very lazy.

thought it was a great show, really flew past. he's gonna be gutted to find out his missus has been banging his best mate, though. ouch.

Still good though but if I'm being honest, I expected it to be better - although the last 10 mins were great.
Yeah I thought that was an odd choice too.

It was more than an odd choice for me. I tried to get my wife to watch it under the pretence it was a **** hot new cop show thinking it would open with the roadblock scene, but the truth was revealed a lot quicker than I expected. :-D

Ha ha, I was more truthful with mine and explained that I wanted her to have an open mind. It was going okay until
.

I suspect subsequent episodes will be viewed alone.

Doesn't Alice wake in a hospital in one of the Resident Evil films?

Yup, the show was very faithful to the comic. Some new stuff was added for the show.

This originated from The Day of the Triffids where the bloke wakes up in the hospital being one of the few people not blinded by the meteor shower.

Almost identical situation in our house. I was in trouble before the first scene ended! Will definitely be a watch alone series for me.

Cannot wait for Friday to come - reviews on metacritic appear to be universally positive - stuff like 'lankmark in television' and 'better than any zombie film I've ever seen' is no doubt pushing my expectations so high I'm bound to be disappointed

This really is utterly superb stuff! Really didn't want it to end - cannot wait until next week.

I hope it's explained how

Really loved Andrew Lincoln in it - nice accent too - great moments with Lennie James' character too - emotional stuff.

I just love the way it's totally dead-serious with very little humour

Amazing blend of make-up/SFX/CGI too - the guys who made it should be really proud - it looked fantastic.

The Zombies are only attracted to light / sound - they wouldn't have tried every door etc. And we don't know for sure that he was the only survivor, since he didn't go back to check every other room in the ward / hospital. Others must have surely just starved to death?

Being the Long-term recovery ward, it would have been more isolated too.

Also, the ward had been sealed, presumably by the military who had made the last stand at the hospital (thus the locked room with the undead in it).

The whole thing was superb.

direct response to that question taken from a Q&A with Robert Kirkman

'EW: I suspect a lot of people who are coming across the story of The Walking Dead for the first time would have thought that the guy-wakes-from-coma-to-discover-that-the-world-has-been-overrun-by-zombies plot was very similar to 28 Days Later. Presumably you had seen that film when you wrote the first issue of the comic?
RK: No. Welcome to my life seven years ago. It was complete coincidence. I saw 28 Days Later shortly before the first issue of Walking Dead was released. That first issue came out in October of 2003 and 28 Days Later was released in the States in June of 2003. So we were working on our second issue by the time I saw it. It was going to be a matter of somehow trying to restage the entire first issue, because it was a very similar coma opening. I made a decision—which I pretty much regret at this point—I said, “You know what? It’s so different [from that point on], I will probably never hear anything about this.” And I was wrong.

Hope that answers your question
