I watched this over the weekend on blu-ray & when choosing the 5.1 english dub it would only play it in stereo.

Anyone else had any problems, could it be my set up, Sony blu-ray player connected via optical out to Pioneer all in one system (about 6 years old).

The Japanese DTS track works fine.

PS: the film's fantastic

The English 5.1 is LPCM which optical cannot handle so it will be cut down to stereo.

No. Coax is the same thing as optical, they're both spdif (just a different lead).

5.1 LPCM will only work via HDMI or I believe it'll go through multi-channel analogue out if your player has that (higher-end players only usually). Over standard optical/coax spdif outs it'll be downmixed to 2.0 due to a lack of bandwidth.

Just finished watching this with the kids on BluRay. Good film, more aimed at the younger kids. My 4yro daughter was quite from the start! She does not remember watching the other Ghibli films because she wants to watch all the films she saw in the clips. So if the weather stays rubbish then it looks like a Ghibli film festival at my place all weekend

Just watched the extra features last night and the feature on Joe Hisaishi contains lots of ravishing clips of Totoro, Kiki and Laputa in HD (as well as some from Porco Rosso that look like they were upscaled from a VCD ). Kiki, not always one of my favourites, looked absolutely fantastic - it glowed! Can't wait

I seem to recall Kiki didn't look great in the featurette footage, I don't think it'll be indicative of the final retail HD transfer.

My SFX Anime special came with a Totoro poster that seems to suggest that its on Blu-Ray now. Clearly its not (over here at least) any ideas when?

Don't know, Nausicaa has only just been released in Japan on Blu-ray so I would imagine Totoro won't be making an appearance until towards the end of the year at the earliest, and most likely sometime next year.
