apart from being totally different. In Buffy she had to kill Angel to close a doorway to hell, in Who The Doctor and Rose were closing a doorway to the void when she fell in and was saved at the last minute leaving her trapped in a different dimension.

Unless you're arguing that the science fiction and fantasy mainstay of "gate to another world" was the sole invention of Joss Whedon ?

The device was set to human template. This is why it also did not affect the cactus people. Donner is "Doctor Donner" and Wilf was shielded, perhaps, by the booth. However, this would also mean that there are more people around the world working in nuclear facilities who were also not affected.

I was wondering what happened to all the babies and children. Do they all have little Master heads on now?

Yeah they actually made it pretty obvious that Wilf didn't change because he was in the booth. When the Master jumped into the machine Wilf said he could see and hear the Master in his head, but as soon as he got in the booth he said it had stopped.

Considering all the adults were of identical age, the logical conclusion is that the children became grown-up Masters too.

Probably worth pointing out that that we're probably putting far more thought into this than Davies did though.

It's really a rubbish idea, and totally out of character for the Master, who always wanted absolute power over others, as opposed to sharing it with six billion "equals".

Quite. They can be exactly the same as him, but they still won't be him - what does it achieve exactly, besides annoying the Doctor? (Even if we allow for a medical repair device copying his mind/knowledge/memories, which is particularly dubious).

Anyway, yes - there's no chance at all that he considered the broader questions of this for a moment - pretty stark contrast to a genuinely thoughtful (and disturbing) science fiction idea like the 'communicator ghosts' in Silence in the Library. Roll on April blahdy blah blah...

Speaking of children...
If everyone became an exact dupe of the Master, size and all, how early in a human's development could that occur?

ie. how many pregnant women exploded that day?

Frankly bar the excellent performance from Cribbins - esp the cafe scene - and the ever likable David Tennant and some good acting from Simms (not that he seems like The Master to me)- this was very poor fare indeed in my view. These specials this year to me have not been very special. Far preferred Season 4 and 3.

On a rewatch just now, I want to know if the leather bondage collar and lead that Simm was wearing for the whole I'm Captain Immortality segment was from RTD's personal collection or was a poor lackey sent out to the Welsh equivalent of Soho to get it?

edit: Oh and you've got to admit that "There is no Human Race, there is just the MASTER RACE" was genius scriptwriting

The only thing that breaks my heart is what a festering turd the first part of the special was. I'm not expecting the second to be a great improvement. We can has Moffat era nao, plz?

I haven't watched much Doc in a long time so I decided to watch the Christmas special. I found the whole thing so ridiculous. John Simms as the Master -- wtf? Some of the worst acting I've seen in a long time. The exposition is soooo boring, the information is never related in an interesting way via action -- it's all talk, talk, talk, talk. Whatever. Let's have a cuppa tea so I can explain to the audience the ridiculous plot. I've never liked RTD's flippant attitude to story in Doctor Who.

It was a masterpiece of treading water. I could have done without the huge slabs of cheese because in between there were some great Doctor/Master moments.

Have to agree about that 'Master Race' line. WTF? I'm not sure we're quite ready to satirise the Final Solution on such a programme, are we?

Oh and FWIW, he's John Simm singular - no 's'.

So just a thought but are we expecting the cribbins revelation to in any way relate to the fact that he was in doctor who as an assistant years ago (the movies not the series)

Tennant was on the BBC Breakfast this morning (and GMTV apparently) and he mention it which got me wondering.

Also I cant find the story now, but there was a link on the BBC news website yesterday about a story relating to complaints about how many shows and appearances tennant has made over christmas. 75 apparently. It does seem a bit excessive and I dont think he's doing himself any favours
