I didn't like that tactic either. However, I wanted the movie and had no intention of being "blackmailed" into adopting BR so I picked up the SD and I'm very happy with it.

Agree----having seen the Smilebox picture I want it, but as I don't have Blu-Ray I can't have it so I'll be delaying purchase, probably for some time.

Great price, but keep in mind Kino's new 2 disc set of The General was sourced from a HD master and as a result has a better picture.

It also has three different scores: Lee Erwin, Robert Israel and the Carl Davis score (which is regarded as being the best score for the film)

The Cinema Club edition is also from a HD master and - unlike even the new Kino - has undergone a frame-by-frame digital restoration, so it looks pristine. The Kino does have the original tints (sepia and blue for night scenes) though in some ways I prefer the crisper black & white images of the Cinema Club, which has better extras in my opinion, including restored versions of The Railrodder and the fascinating complementary documentary Buster Keaton Rides Again. It's worth £3.99 for those alone!

I agree the Carl Davis score is by far the best, which was the only reason I got the Kino. The Hisaishi score on Cinema Club doesn't work for me, although there is also the (almost hidden) option of the Robert Israel score too.

Any HD master is only as good as the print that's been transfered to it.

Clearly, an HD master that has undergone a frame-by-frame digital restoration should be significantly better than the print that's been transfered to it.

Well, no. Just saying it's from an HD master tells you nothing. A lot of these old films are printed from a neg that has been made from a print, & so on & so on. A ton of dirt is going to be printed in, the image could be very soft, & a lack of gray scale (no detail in the dark areas - just like an LCD TV!!).

You can get the very best out of a print, & tinker around with it, but in the end it's down to how good the print is. So, as I say, saying it's from a new HD master doesn't tell me much.

Have a look at free DVD's in newspapers in the Bargain Forum. Lots of very good war movies being given away with the Mail in the next two weeks, incl;
Sea Of Sand
Dunkirk
Angles One Five
& lots more (&...sod it, I know I'm supposed to say what a right wing rag, but I quite like it!).

Starts Saturday with The Dam Busters.

I'm not surprised they've sold out at that price for such an enjoyable movie.
