RoboCop Returns directed by Neill Blomkamp

Based on an unproduced sequel script for the original film written years ago, that never ended up happening.

Justin Rhodes, who co-wrote the Terminator reboot that Tim Miller is directing, is rewriting a script that was written by Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, the duo who wrote the original 1987 movie, considered a sci-fi and action classic.

At first, the consumerism, materialism and Reaganomics, that ’80s theme of America on steroids, came through most strongly. But As I’ve gotten older, the part that really resonated with me is identity, and the search for identity. As long as the human component is there, a good story can work in any time period, it’s not locked into a specific place in history. What’s so cool about RoboCop is that like good Westerns, sci-fi films and dramas, the human connection is really important to a story well told. What draws me now is someone searching for their lost identity, taken away at the hands of people who are benefiting from it, and seeing his memory jogged by events. That is most captivating. The other thing I am excited by is the chance to work again with Justin Rhodes. He has added elements that are pretty awesome, to a sequel that was set in the world of Verhoeven. This is a movie I would love to watch."

Not got high hopes for this

Chappie was rubbish and Elysium wasn't much cop either. Neill K has a good eye for visuals but getting decent performances out of his actors is not his forte.

Unless Peter Weller is back in the suit and Paul Verhoeven comes on board to co direct I'm out.

I think it safe to say we will NEVER get a Robocop like the first one, the ingredients are just not there anymore.

Robocop is one of the greatest films of all time. It'll never be repeated unfortunately but, if they can get close to original formula, it may just work. But I'd love to see a worthy sequel.

I have a bit of a soft spot for Robocop 2. Robocop 3 was a dreadful made-for-TV abomination and Robocop 2014 was just dull.

Presumably this will feature Sharlto Copley in the suit and a future America that looks suspiciously like South Africa...

What about the Prime Directives Mini series which had Page Fletcher as Robocop?

Robocop 3 was absolutely terrible but miles better than the Robocop series, never saw the Robocop cartoon.

Difficult to get excited over the guy who is rewriting the script, his IMDB credits don't inspire confidence.

I do hope they reach out to Peter Weller and use that CGI/make-up de-ageing process we've seen used sporadically by Marvel et al.

I think there's going to be an influx of movies using it in the next couple of years, now that the technique is getting better and better. Looking forward to Scorsese's The Irishman in particular.

He doesn't sound bothered by the satire anymore, I hope he still makes sure its in there as that's one of the highlights, I'd buy that for a dollar!

They've already rebooted it once to uncaring muted applause, so I don't why yet another reboot would work any better. Whatever they do, it won't be as good as the original, so why bother?
Still, hopefully it will be better than Chappie, or at least full of slightly less-obnoxious characters.

It's not a reboot, it's a sequel to the original Robocop

Blomkamp has left the project to make something else. Not sure I'm particularly bothered given that he just keeps making the same film over and over, but he was really pushing to get Peter Weller back in the lead role.

Why would you want Peter Weller back in the lead role? He's 72 and looks about 92.

District 9 was overrated, Elysium is alrightish, Chappie is god awful. He did do a pretty good job of ripping off Robocop in District 9 though so I was holding out some small hope that he could deliver his first unquestionably "good" film with this sequel. I have absolutely no interest in him doing an Alien sequel.

He had to go. Somewhere there is a crime happening.
