Regarding The Thin Red Line, I was browsing HTF yesterday and found this which may explains the lack of releases.

I must say I disliked the film when I watched the Blu Ray a few weeks ago to say it is poor compared to The Thin Red Line is putting it mildly. I wish I had never seen it. I just found it a rambling messy bore (much like what some think of TTRL I guess).

Damn! This film just grows and grows on me... First viewing... nice cinematography, but general indifference. Subsequent viewings... amazement mixed with fascination.

Quick question for anyone who cares or may have the info I seek...

When John Smith first goes up river to find the 'king' Ben Chaplin is amongst that small crew.

Then when they land Chaplin's the one holding the native guide, then he, John Smith another British guy and the other native guide go further up river in a canoe. Then Smith get's lost in the reeds and forest and that's the last we see of Chaplin and the other Brit. We are left to assume he and the other guy get attacked and killed by the natives.

Then when Smith is taken to the Native village there is a blink and you will miss it moment where a Native gives a severed hand to one of the chiefs.

In the script it says that the native warriors give the hearts, heads and hands of Smiths two colleagues to the chiefs.

I'd love to know if Malick shot anything else of Chaplin or if severed heads was ever made for the scene. I don't expect gore from Malick, but a severed head shown to Smith would have explained his easy expectance of death when the natives put his head on a rock and rush him with clubs (before Pocahontas steps in and saves his life)

If anyone has any info on this, I'd love to hear it.
