Wow. The Beaver raves about the R1 DVD. My eyes must be wonky, as it's pretty mediocre IMO. EiV's effort looks worse of course.

It seems nicer than the R2, but that wouldn't be a first for a Malick flick. Badlands looks nicer in R1 too.

Thanks for the caps anephric!! Good to find out they are different. The R2 indeed appears a notch darker. Thanks much.

I finally got round to seeing this tonight and despite finding The Thin Red Line pompous and self-important (although admittedly hynotically beautiful) I loved every minute of The New World.
Malick was the perfect director to handle the love story and the 'fish out of water' aspect. The photography was astonishing and even the random, "stock nature footage" clicked after a while.

Does anyone know about (or indeed already have) this Italian dvd release that contains both cuts of the film?

Nope! Not heard about it until you posted.

It would be nice to have the longer cut, and even nicer to have the super long cut of this that's bound to exist, like the 5 hour The Thin Red Line.

My request has been answered!

New Line are releasing an extended version of The New World, one that adds 30 mins to the film.

http://www.digitalbits.com/#mytwocents

That does raise the question of which version this will be. The first version was 150 mins (which I managed to see in a cinema over here on release day) but the subsquent version, and the one on dvd was 135 mins.

I doubt this will win anyone over to it, but i'll be getting it for sure.

172 mins though means its a 3rd version, and not 30 mins added to either the previous versions.

Also I read on the imdb that Malick prefers the shorter version, but that said I can't see the studio bringing this out just for the sake of it. Its hardly like it's got a massive fan base clamouring for it.

Perhaps there is still hope for the 5 hour version of The Thin Red Line.

Huzzah! Great news about the extended version, although it's a crime that there's no Blu-ray release to go with it.

I'm dead chuffed about this, but then I remember that I wasn't all that impressed with the DNR'ed picture and poor colour gradation on the original R1 DVD. I mention it because the new version is even longer but retains the hour-long documentary, and if it's all on a single disc then the picture quality is going to suffer even more. . .

Has anyone seen the extended cut yet? I'm not sure whether to get this DVD or not...

This thread should probably be moved to the "Modern Films on DVD forum" - thanks mods!

My extended cut is currently in the post! Will watch it first opportunity I get once it arrives. I was one of the lucky few who got to see the longer cut at the Cinema over here (by accident I think Cardiff Cineworld had the long print.) and it was amazing.

Just read the following post on HTF:
Quote:
Now here's a surprise: the digital copy included with the DVD is not the extended cut, nor the 135-minute theatrical cut, but the 150-minute NY/LA cut.
Will the download work for us UK people, I haven't got the new dvd yet?

I haven't tried, but it says it won't work, you need to be US based.
