That's very roughly the release order - although Spirited Away and Grave... were the first Optimum releases, at the time Optimum didn't have rights to the rest of the Ghibli films so I suspect they were rereleased with new packaging later on.

Just a bump as I've added all the last round of releases - so barring some R2J and R3s the list should be complete!

Spirited Away has been announced as one of the BBC's "big family films" this Christmas

Hopefully the collection is getting more attention following the film4 seasons. Apparently they are showing Only Yesterday at some point in December.

I am I the only one who sees the irony of a thread called "The Definitive Studio Ghibli DVD Thread", when it doesn't even include all of the studio's films?

C'mon, let's get Ocean Waves listed!

R2j is non anamorphic, DVD-5, crap transfer but comes with the MV: On Your Mark.

Sorry but your source on this is incorrect. The specs for the R2J are:

Disc 1: Main Feature (DVD9)

1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen
Japanese DD2.0
English and Japanese subtitles
50min Documentary

Disc 2: Storyboards (DVD9)

1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen
Japanese DD2.0
Ocean Waves Trailers
Ghibli Collection Trailer
DVD Trailers

The On Your Mark music video is only included on the "Ghibli ga Ippai Special Short Short" DVD which released alongside Howl's Moving Castle in Japan.

That's a Chinese bootleg.

OK - I've added Ocean Waves to the list. The reason it wasn't on there to begin with was that is isn't in the Disney/Ghibli deal so it's unlikely to get a Western release so the R2J/R3s are the only option unless Madman/Optimum source it independently.

I'd love to see it as I found the lesser known Ghiblis (Whisper of the Heart and Only Yesterday) to be the most magical.

Well I think you will be let down. It was made as a TV special except it's not all that good.

Well that's by Ghibli standards, it's still OK. There is some dialect fun.

Latest Ghibli flick, Earthsea is coming on R2UK DVD in Q3 2007. Apparently they'll be no R1 release until like 2009, when SciFi Channel's exclusive rights to Earthsea expire.

Earthsea Gets UK Release
While licensing problems are in the way of a North American release of Gedo Senki, UK DVD releaser Optimum will release an English subtitled, region 2 DVD for the UK market in the summer of 2007. Thanks Stephen.

This seems a great thread for some advice !

I'm in Malaysia at the moment and wanting to pick up a Ghibli boxset.

Not too bothered about getting the definitive versions of each film, (it's a present, although I will pick up one for myself as well if it's cheap enough and really nice !) but what I *don't* want is a bootleg version.

Anyone offer any advice on the official boxset releases over here ? The only DVD (not VCD) collection I've seen offers (IIRC) 12 of the films (no Howl's) on 6 discs, in 3 amarays, in a cardboard sleeve. Googled but can't find a pic of the cover, and it's *not* any of these -
http://www.discountanimedvd.com/detail.asp?dvdno=158
http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/vid...bli/ippai.html

Can anyone advise ?

As far as I'm aware, the only legit Ghibli boxset is the chinese one, first one on the nausicaa.net page. That one at discountanimedvd.com is a bootleg, as is a fair proportion of the stuff they sell.

12 films on only 6 discs in 3 cases would sound like a similar bootleg to the one shown on discountanimedvd

Yep - any collections that feature more than one film per disc are dodgy. The only collection I know about is the IVL R3 one (and that's simply all the existing 2-disk editions in a slipcase). TBH, they are all cheap enough on R2 (I think they're all under £10) and you don't get the useless R3 2nd discs.

I have the R2J dvd of Nausicaa and Only Yesterday. Both include English subs. The list doesn't state that. So does the R2J ver of The Cat Returns.

The R3 Taiwan release of Kiki's has proper English subtitles instead of dubtitles. You can get it at yesasia.com.

Updated - I could use some more details about Only Yesterday such as extras.
