Lots of good stuff already discussed but I can't believe no one's mentioned David Cronenberg's The Brood -- I still cross the street to avoid little kids in duffles!

I can recall the television adverts for The Brood, hidden camera in the cinema trained on the audience as they screamed their heads off with voiceover-man describing how terrifying & horrific the movie was. Of course, several years later when I rented the vhs of it, I was extremely disappointed & didn't find it even remotely scary.

French film Haute Tension is pretty good for Scariness moments and a good twist.

Other than that, in terms of real scariness (not gore) then go for Halloween and The Shining both really good scary movies.

I found poltergeist, the hitcher and the thing pretty scary when i was younger.

Actually pretty suprised the hollywood studios haven't tried to remake poltergeist yet.

That scary geezer in poltergeist 2 scared the bejeezus out of me for a long time too!

The blood testing scene in The Thing still makes me jump. So simple yet so cool.

Also when I was about 11 me and a mate pinched a vhs of a film called "Q - The winged serpent"

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084556/

It scared the crap outta me, had scenes of live human sacrifice, hearts being cut out and the like and i didn't sleep right for weeks

I'm sure its pretty tame by todays standards, but i still never want to see that film again!

Also remember a sun bathing woman by a rooftop pool getting plucked up by Q, however still not as scary as the heart cutting out scene, by the people that worshipped Q.
