The Dario Argento Thread

Hello guys I did a search but its very bitty about this great director, not a question from me but from a mate (as I have a large collection I am assumed to know everything)

It concerns the director Dario Argento and the two boxsets on sale at Play, I was in the belief that these were pretty pointless as most of them are cut but I cant seem to find any Region One alternatives or much information on the how they compare.

Any help would be great

The Ultimate Collection

Profondo Rosso –
Cat ‘O Nine Tails
Demons
Demons 2
Phenomena
Bird with the crystal plumage

Here

The Dario Argento Collection

Suspiria
Tenebrae
Terror at the Opera
The Stendhal Syndrome

Im pretty sure Profondo Rosso is the only one thats cut anymore and thats only for a brief scene of animal cruelty.

The first set is nasty - the second (Anchor Bay) set is pretty worthwhile, if you don't want to hunt down the titles separately in their best versions.

Thanks for the replies, i think for the price that these are you can't really go far wrong, Anephric the first set is nasty? meaning transfer? or just the films?

Transfers. They're bargain-basement all the way. The AB (and Arrow) ones in the second set are at least competent ranging up to excellent.

The R1 releases from Anchor Bay a few years ago remain the definitive versions of all Argento movies bar Tenebrae which has an AB R2 version that is better.

Been an Argento follower since I saw Suspiria on VHS in 1982 ,but I've never had an opportunity to see a good quality version of Four Flies on Grey Velvet.

I was hoping that the DVD era would yield some results but still nothing

The R2 AB Tenebrae is an NTSC-PAL conversion, and is still missing a few secs of footage. I'm pretty sure the Dutch R2 (released as "Shadows") is the best extant release.

Don't forget he edited Dawn of the Dead (1978) for a more action/horror cut of Romero's film, the "European Version", found on the R1 4 disc set.

And replaced all the cool muzak with Goblin tunes.

Unfortunately there's a tangled web of rights problems with that particular title. Paramount tried a few years back to get an R1 release and gave up I believe...

I think Dragon (the German DVD company who've done a few other Argento releases) were the last entity that made a noise about FFoGV, and that was a couple of years ago.. Nothing since.

The missing seconds are for print damage, and the 5.1 track makes up for that.

The UK dvd beats the US one for being anamorphic
I think the Dutch dvd is not 5.1.

Also better than the US is the Italian dvd of The Stendhal Syndrome

The AB UK really isn't the best one out there, and pointless AB upmixes of stereo tracks do not make for a superior dvd.

The "print damage" saga is long and contentious for Tenebrae - have a Google. If an obscure Dutch DVD distributor can find a decent, uncut master, why couldn't AB US/UK?

How many of those films is Asia in then?

Edit: Ah, my bad - the controversial one I had heard of was Trauma, not one of the ones listed. Sorry for the thread hijack! (also found out why it was 'controversial' on wiki - internet ftw)

Forget where I read it, but wasn't either Blue Underground or AB releasing remastered versions of Suspiria, Inferno, Tenebrae & Phenomena at some point? Hopefully fixing the awful remixes (Suspiria), missing footage (Tenebrae) etc.

Tried watching my old R1 of Phenomena a while ago and it had succumbed to DVD rot...

Yep, they're re-releasing some of the AB-released Argento titles - from what I've read they're exactly that, though: re-issues. Haven't read about any improvements. Certainly Profundo Rosso seems exactly the same.

Some extensive details of the Tenebrae DVDs:
http://whiggles.landofwhimsy.com/wri...e-tenebre.html

Basically there is no definitive disc at the moment, so I for one am going to wait and see what the future brings before investing in any of the foreign discs.

Just a note on the ABUK set - the disc of 'Terror at the Opera' disc (also available separately) is worth having, as it includes the superior original Italian track which is not included on the US DVD, although the subtitles are copies of the English track so don't completely match up, and there are some audio drop-outs (my review).

5.1 remixes may be pointless to you but I find many of them much better than a mono track crowded into one speaker.

I compared the missing shots from the UK and US dvd's with my old VHS original and while for a completist its annoying that even 20 seconds are gone,I can live with them until a better version comes out.

For me the opening up of the soundtrack makes up for the lost seconds .

If you take a look at an early issue of Video Watchdog film director William Lustig ,who supervised the transfers of the Roan LD's that subsequently got transferred to DVD (aswell as some of their Hammer titles too) explains the background to the condition of the masters.

As they were prepared for LD in 1997 its not surprising that the intervening years would yield superior elements.

Looking at the forthcoming Blue Underground rereleases of some Argento and Fulci films ,the extras appear to be identical to the AB dvd's so I can't see that the films themselves will have been improved in any way.

But I can hope

I was lucky enough to have seen Four Flies on Grey Velvet at the South Bank cinema (NFT) in London where Dario Argento was attending also.

Whilst it's a must-see if you want to call yourself a true Argento completist (as well as having seen 5 Days in Milan as well), it's not one of his best.

Cracking final shot, mind.
