I've never seen the film, or even heard of it before this thread, but am very tempted to give it a go now.

Cool, I've been meaning to pick up Black Rain for a while but might as well wait a bit longer now

Scott related all this in that Omnibus documentary a good few years ago. It does sound totally bonkers but I don't think this is one of those "It's grown in the telling" anecdotes because he appeared still to be bewildered by the whole process.

Also worth a view for the presence of Takakura Ken.

Excellant film saw it in America on it's initial release when on holiday there - well worth a look if not seen or haven't seen recently.....

Nah, I've always hated that cover.

New one's alright. I'm just happy the film's being given the special treatment it deserves, TBH.

And Black Rain captures it perfectly. Other more "important" movies have tried to capture that essence and failed. Tarantino couldn't get it in KILL BILL. LOST IN TRANSLATION...no, I don't think so. And yes the DVD version transfer sucks, c'mon do it right and give us a real DVD.
Ages since I've seen it, so can't remember the loopholes etc - what are they?

Thanks

The postie left it on my doorstep yesterday. I got in last night at 1am and put it on to see the quality of the transfer on my set up. Ended up watching the documentaries and listening to the commentary.
Fantastic image and sound for a great little film. The documentaries are very well done, too. Nothing like the self-congratulatory pap you see on other releases, this actually delves into the problems they faced with the shoot and how everyone felt about filming in Japan and New York in the middle of winter. Michael Douglas even came accross favourably (only I guess I was tainted by the recent mockumentary on Channel 4's Star Stories with Catherine Zeta-Jones ).

Great little special edition, I'm well happy.

I ordered from Deepdiscountdvd which seemed to be the cheapest, glad you posted although I'm mainly buying for improved image quality it's good to see they've made an effort with the documentaries.

The HD version is now available for pre-order from cdjapan http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview....EY=PPWH-111860 although the Ł27 price tag is a bit steep (my copy of the new CE is on its way so may make do with that for now) from what I have found out so far the HD version appears to only be available as a Japanese collectors edition and I have not been able to find any R1 (I know HD is not region coded at the moment) but the availability of the HD-DVD may be limited for the immediete future

My CE only arrived this am (Sent 2.5 weeks ago ) and just stuck it on and put the old version in a second DVD source and witched between the 2 all I can say is WOW, the PQ is amazing on the new version compared to the old, looks like a VHS to DVD comparison, sound on DD EX is pretty stunning too on the bike race. Anyway have to wait till tonight to watch the whole movie (for about the 30th time, sad eh!) but anyone thinking about ordering this just do it!

Is the new CE a new transfer or just new special features?
