I've ordered one in the hope they are hacked somehow - with no USB port, updates will come "over the wire" which means the possibility of running a TFTP server and mimicking the official update server to get the box to update itself to a stock firmware...

So it looks like you can get into the Roku dev mode as per the normal Roku box and plex will work on it fine. Anyone found anything else you can do with these?

Pinched from HUD

For those asking about hacks, we now have an unconfirmed instructions on how to run Plex:

The Now TV box has been found to still provide access to the Roku development mode. This allows you to sideload one developer version app to your device. Not all apps are made available in this way but Plex is!

How to install Plex onto your Now TV box

1) Enable dev mode on your box by pressing:
HOME 3 times
UP 2 times
RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT

(if this doesn't work then make sure you are not leaving long pauses between button presses)

2) Enable developer mode on the screen that comes up.

3) Download Plex client for Roku from https://github.com/downloads/plexinc...ublic/Plex.zip

4) Open web browser on your computer and open http:// (example. http://192.168.1.100)

5) Click browse and navigate to the Plex.zip you downloaded

6) Click the install button

7) Run plex

Instructions taken from Plex FAQ and Roku forums.

If I can sideload the Twitch and Giantbomb apps onto it I'd consider it £10 well spent (even though my Raspberry Pi with OpenELEC can already do it )

Right I have Plex working now so looking forward to trying this out. Plex is based on XBMC from years ago it seems and doesn't seem quite as polished so far. I'd prefer to have XBMC though too so hopefully it'll appear one day. I guess it depends on the Roku's hardware and I wonder if it's powerful enough. The advantage of Plex is that the server will transcode down to a less taxing format for devices like the Roku it seems.

Is Plex on Roku free as it's not free on Android or iOS?

Please could you be more precise on the details 3 and 4. I'm a novice and am not sure whether you download from plex on the pc or sky now box. Thanks

I'm guessing it means put "http://[ip address assigned to your sky now tv box]" then there'll be some kind of web interface to select the plex.zip you just download to upload to the box. But as I say that's all a guess.

Another hidden menu via this:

Update: After much wrangling the WiFi connectivity issue was eventually resolved by accessing the hidden menu (press home button 5 times followed by fast-forward, play, rewind, play and then fast-forward again) and selecting “disable network pings” in the options.

Can't confirm any of this though as I've not got mine yet!

Remember dev mode will only allow one app at a time.

awesome, think I will buy another!

For plex streaming alone, this is well worth it.

Its confirmed on the plex forums. You can use the hidden menu to side load apps such as Plex and possibly others .

I know that netflix for the android was decompiled and modified to enable HD streaming and other improvements over at the XDA forums. It's quite possible that someone could potentially do the same for the Roku Netflix app so that it could also be side loaded.
