Haunting of Hill House (Netflix)

Coming a little late to this perhaps - I'm sure many binged it on its opening weekend, but got round to finishing it last night. Watched with my 15yo son, and had a great shared experience over the 3 weeks it took to watch.

I was impressed at the multi-layered story, characters you wanted to spend time with, and how uplifting it all was overall.

Visually it has a great look, plenty going on in the foreground (and background) of shots. One episode with perhaps 5/6 long, tracking one-shots was stunning. Would be great to see a behind the scenes on the logistics of prepping and delivering those scenes.

One of the best series we've watched in a long time, and whilst I know it's been hyped elsewhere we both came to it knowing little.

I thought it was brilliant. Loved every minute. It's easily the best TV show I've watched this year.

I was disappointed by it going in as a bonefide member of the imaginary Flanagan fan club. I thought it was good though, just not great. My opinion since then has dropped because of how rabid the fanbase are about it. If you criticise ANY aspect of the show you immediately get labeled a "hater" over on Blu-ray.com. No TV show is, nor ever will be, THAT ******* good!

Haunting of Hill House (Netflix)

Chip in with the bits you didn’t like - hopefully enough decorum here for you.

My main neg;

I thought it was baggy at times and some of the dialogue was ratcheted up in the pretentious stakes. Perhaps would’ve benefitted from being a tighter 8 episodes - However, definitely felt like each episode had an arc that made sense. So perhaps some of the 70minute ones could’ve been trimmed to 50-55mins.

I thought it was excellent - one of the best shows of the year.

This was my original comment on the series:

As a fan of Flanagan's film work I was pretty disappointed by this. It's bloated, self-indulgent, occasionally tedious, and completely devoid of any kind of spooky atmosphere (It's jump scare 101 over and over and over and over). I was also frustrated by the family saga: At times it's poetic, Flanagan handles the heavier dramatic beats beautifully, but almost every episode rambles on to 50mins+ without tightening things up. If this had been 10eps of 45mins like a traditional show I think we could have had something special. I really do feel Netflix's loosey-goosey episode length restrictions are hurting their productions more than helping them.

They also should have called it The Shining and cashed in on that novel instead given the obvious influence and thematic similarities, because there's almost no trace of Jackson's novel to find! They should have called it The Shining: A Family Saga or some **** to make it known it's not a direct adapation but a thematic continuation.

I'd give it a 6/10. Worth a watch (especially over Halloween like I did) but lower your expectations accordingly. This is being insanely overrated like pretty much any modern horror that has even a lick of intelligent thought put into it. Such is the creative bankruptcy of the genre today.

A great review - thanks for sharing.

I too loved the slow zoom crawls during the lengthy monologues. Superb acting and presumably patience from cast and crew to tolerate multiple takes.
