Good or Bad Final Episodes?

I've spun this off from the giving up on shows as it's now a debate about the season finale of Lost. I find it difficult to believe that after investing in a show for 6 years, you give up on it during the final episode.

That being said, do many really good shows have a really good finale?

I can't prove it, but for me, often the better the show, the worse the final episode? Or maybe we just think so after expecting something extra special.

Many shows of course never actually get to give us even an attempt at a finale.

So off the top of my head I'm struggling to think of a really good ending, I guess because they try to wrap things up and they often go out with a bit of a whimper.

I didn't think any of the Star Trek ones were great, I quite liked TNG as an episode, but didn't really seem to be an ending and I guess it lived on to Star Trek Nemesis.

Things like the West Wing, can't really see how it could have ended any other way.

Seinfeld was just weird.

Justified had a good ending. Halt and Catch Fire was good too. Most are poor though I agree - especially Lost.

The Shield wrap up was terrific. Also liked the bittersweet finale to Quantum Leap. Lost ending actually makes me wish it got cancelled prior to the finale season. At least all the possibilities would still be alive.

Gravity falls and Regular Show (both cartoons) both had great endings imho.

Burn notice also had a pretty good ending.

Enterprise bad last episode a real real kick in the face followed by a smearing of dog **** in the wounds.

Babylon 5 the proper final episode Sleeping In Light possibly the only time I have ever had some dust in my eye while watching a show

Star Trek TNG did a good job at ending it

Star Trek Voyager not so good an ending by bringing back the Borg Queen AGAIN and taking her out AGAIN with a bit of future paradox thrown in for good measure but at least they got home.

Star Trek DS9 Did not like this ending after slowly ramping it up since season 4; the end of the war felt rushed with few massive battles. Then we have the episodes with Gul Dukat and the Kai Winn joining up. l would have liked it to end with more than Sisko being missing for me the Last shot should have been a Borg Cube showing up.

I don't think you can be too critical of a final episode if the show has been cancelled / reprieved unexpectedly.

M*A*S*H was good. Cheers was good. Babylon 5 was good but needed a box of tissues to get through it.

Agree with quite a few that have been mentioned. Here's a few more:

Band of Brothers
The Wire
Scrubs (season 8, I'm not counting 9)

Bad

Sons of Anarchy - The whole final season was awful, you just hated them all by the end. The end was so telegraphed though and then when it came down to it, it was a police vs bike chase that seemed to be done at 20mph and looked ridiculous.
Then the F/X shot of the crash was woeful.

The wire was a really well done ending - last episode 'foreshadowing' the start of the first really nicely and showing the pointlessness of the war on drugs. Definitely helped that all the seasons were standalone, and fitted into a planned story arc on the city - drugs, cops, unions, politicians - across all the seasons.

Also thought the end to West Wing was good.

Battlestar Galactica did a good job of wrapping up the mess of some of the plotlines that appeared to have been made up on the spot.

The last season of Castle was a stinker and was rightly cancelled hence an absolutely terrible tacked on ending

Too right. The wife and I were big fans of the show but we gave up on the final season about 1/3 of the way in, and just came back for the last episode...wished we hadn't bothered.

For me Six Feet Under is still the standout. I just think it’s music was perfect and it’s such a hit on an emotional level.

Dexter, but then all episodes from Season 6 onwards were pretty bad IMO.
