Doctor Who Series 11 (2018) - The One With A Lady Doctor

A pretty standard modern Dr Who episode tonight. Not bad. Not great.

Next week's preview looks exciting though!

I followed your link - brilliant.

Anyway, I thought tonight's Doctor Who was rather good. I want to see more but it was definitely better than I was expecting.

Was better than expected. Jodie was good, giving a very "Tennant" performance, but dialling it back just enough to not be annoying. The companions were ok, although I'm still struggling to see Bradley as anything other than the host of The Chase. Biggest plus for me was the much improved music, which sounded darker & more serious. The look of the show is more film-like too. Good cliff-hanger too!

I have a history of really disliking Doctor Who, but the news of a woman finally getting the lead role piqued my interest so I checked it out.

Pretty good fun, while also dipping into all the things which traditionally made me dislike the show. Jodie is fantastic and even Bradley Walsh didn't annoy me much. I like the companions.

It's also cheap, cheesy, has terrible dialogue and is aimed a little TOO much at children. It's often too manic and simplistic. But I'm okay with that. The visual effects were actually far better than I expected - the same can't be set for the practical ones, though.

I'm going to stick with it for now!

Yep, that had me thinking, why need the tardis when have that police car. The logistics and timings of that where way out. The exterior shots of train seemed to show it in middle field / rural area.

At the end of the last episode, she was seen plummeting towards Earth after falling out of the TARDIS. The first time we see her in this, she crashes through the train roof. Seems like continuity to me.

Thoroughly enjoyed it myself. Liked the cinematography & music, & Whittaker was excellent. Not sure about the group of chums yet. The guy who can't ride a bike seems like a weak spot in the cast, acting-wise.

The 'Coming Soon' at the end was very odd though. Rather than the usual trailer (which we got next anyway), it was just a list of upcoming guest stars.

Anyone know how many episodes we're getting this series?

11 in total, and that's including the Christmas special.

I really enjoyed the ep. My biggest concern going in was Bradley Walsh, but thought he was really good in it. Jodie was brilliant. Definite Tennant vibe, but if she can hold off from the excessive gurning which he slipped in to, then she should be fine

Yeah, the "upcoming guest stars" section was totally bizarre, especially as for most of them, I was like, "Who the **** are you?!?" .... Was hoping for the likes of Alex Kingston as River, for the inevitable nudge, nudge, wink, wink lesbian episode, or is that just me?

Could have sworn the end of the last episode had the TARDIS crashing into a building ?? Hence all the jokes, at the time, about women drivers.

A colleague at work and I decided that was some sort of parody ?? Why else would they do it ?

I enjoyed that. It was a bit subdued for a Nu-Who regeneration ep but I'm OK with that after the increasingly OTT stuff we've had for years.

Short trailer for ep 2:

Yes, I agree with all of that one here. Was good, not great. She was good, not great. Supporting cast, good not great.

But a big improvement on the stagey-ness of the last few years where the whole thing felt like it was a bit too pleased with itself. If they keep the threat small, the stories straightforwards and continue to develop the supporting cast and their backstory then they'll have saved the show from eating itself.

Finally got around to seeing this and really enjoyed it - much better than the last series. As others have said, very similar to David Tennant in character so far.

Much improved.

I grew up watching Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, then pretty much gave up on watching Dr Who apart from the occasional episode here and there...none of which appealed to me.

Having a female Dr intrigued me,so watched the 1st episode and enjoyed it.

Not seen last nights yet, but it has certain;ly drawn me back in so far.

2nd episode was ok but I was disappointed at how soon the show has already descended to the predictable running down corridors & the sonic screwdriver saving the day numerous times. Just so lazy & boring. Thankfully the team dynamics are interesting & there were a few good lines & Jodi remains very watchable...
