Star Trek - Patrick Stewart returns as Picard

Pre-production has officially begun on the untitled Picard show.

Details we currently know:
  • it will be set in 2399 (20 years after Nemesis)
  • Picard won't necessarily be a captain anymore
  • So far, none of the other TNG cast have been asked to participate - or at least, that's what they're saying.

Also, very notable that Kirsten Beyer and Michael Chabon are on the writing staff.
I'm very excited.

I had a big smile for ages after I'd seen the photo on Instagram.

If he hasn't made Admiral, then his career has really stalled

I feel like Picard wouldn't accept being an admiral. He wants to explore, if not in Starfleet then following his archaeology passion.

Does anyone feel having Kurtzman as the Star Trek Czar is a bad omen? I really wish they would at least get Ron Moore or Ira Behr involved.

Some new info from the producers. The Picard show will have a very different mood and style to Discovery, and that will be the same with any future Trek that's coming. Also, the shows will be given breaks in between so that we're not overwhelmed by new Trek.

Damned if you damned if you don't. DS9 was very different from TNG and fans just didn't appreciate it at the time. I see posts daily on Reddit that day they didn't watch DS9 because it was so different but now they are giving it a chance they are really enjoying it.

As long as none of them look like they should belong on the CW I will be so in.

Deep Space Nine is my favourite TV series ever. I recently tried to get my friends into DS9, even putting together an episode playlist for them to skip the unnecessary stuff or aspects of the series I knew would put them off. Patience apparently is a virtue and unfortunately they had already passed judgement on the series after the first few episodes I recommended.

DS9 is a really difficult TV series to explain or sell to people who don’t have the patience or open mindedness to fully appreciate it. It is the darkest Star Trek series ever made but also the funniest in my opinion - this kind of understanding of DS9 is probably reserved for the true fans to appreciate. The way the different races and their belief systems play off each other, in both dramatic and comedic ways is something you can’t really expect new viewers to grasp, no matter how much you wished they would.

I would like to add that I have never uderstood this whole Deep Space Nine v Babylon 5 element. We had what I consider to be a golden age of science fiction on TV and we are richer for the presence of both series, and they both offer something very different and entertaining that should be savoured. It is very clear in early DS9 episodes like ‘A Man Alone’ for example, that if the original Star Trek series represented ‘a wagon train to the stars’ then the Deep Dpace Nine station was more representative of the old western town, with the trouble/conflicts coming to it, rather than than the reverse.

I’m not saying DS9 didn’t have its low points, it did and every series does. But it was ahead of its time in many ways. Deep Space Nine did not insult the intelligence of viewers by having a reset button at the end of every episode. It had the first black commander/captain on Star Trek, which quite frankly I didn’t even consider as a ‘thing’ at the time. I am colour blind in that sense - Deep Dpace Nine stands the test of time on its own merits; a fantastic cast and a phenomenal ensemble cast as well.

Well if nothing else this post probably proves I should probably turn my router off before going out for a drink...

Here's some new interviews snippets that explain a bit more about the setting of the show. Potentially spoiler-esque if you want to go into it knowing nothing, but nothing too specific.
