Question Acts that have been incredibly popular but didn't do it for you

Welcome

For me it has to be Robbie Williams. Nothing I have heard has ever given me goose pimples. Angels is played a lot at the end of parties I've been to but just doesn't it do it for me. Is their any major act that never did it for you?

Thinking of you

Mas

Coldplay for me. My other half thinks Chris Martin has an amazing voice whereas I find it, and their songs generally, quite bland and ordinary.

I understand the Coldplay thing - when they did the Olympics it was obvious no-one else of their era has the same number of songs/hits Joe Public will recognise.

Manics are critically feted but not had a hit in ages.

I don't recall the Manics ever really being massively popular, they were always around and pretty decent.

Coldplay
The Smiths
Bob Marley
Jimi Hendrix
Pink Floyd
AC/DC
Nirvana (I'm 50/50 on them)
The Rolling Stones
Ed Sheeran (a contender for the worst thing ever to happen to popular music)
Sinatra
The Beach Boys
The Who

Yeah, I'm pretty stupid.

There is too many to even type as I have a general apathy to most mainstream pop music. I don't hate it but it generally does nothing for me so I just ignore it.

Outside of pure pop there are artists that I can appreciate the talent but have to admit do absolutely nothing for me mainly because I'm not overly enamoured by their genre of music. In this group would be Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra etc.

I do have a particular hatred of Oasis though. I literally cannot hear what other people hear. Horrible vocals over dreary songs. I wonder if the fact that I find the Gallaghers repellent colours my opinion of them but I'm not sure as a lot of my favourite bands have total bell ends in them.

More songs for me, but I really don't get U2 or their massive popularity.

I remember hearing Rihanna's Umbrella song that had topped the hit parade for 16 weeks and thinking, is that it?

Oddly Glastonbury Festival turned me around on two acts - I always found Coldplay pretty bland, but their set two years ago was just stunning and made me reappraise how I felt about them...and then Radiohead last year - I was never a particular fan, but kind of admired them. Then I saw their self indulgent crap at last year's Glastonbury and saw through the Emperor's New Clothes...

I don't get Queen at all...and so I also don't get Muse, who are basically sub-Queen with all the bombast without the tongue in the cheek.

I suppose a lot of it is to be around long enough to pull together a decent greatest hits CD

I will add Red Hot Chili Peppers to my list. I really love the Blood Sugar Sex Magik album and a few other great tracks here and there but I find the vast majority of their material is just tedious filler.

Isn't that the same with most bands, a lot of bands I used to recall can seem to make a living out of one decent song and then refusing to play it when you see them live.

Foo Fighters. I like a couple of the singles, but their albums always seem to bore me.

I guess it’s because they still want to be seen as relevant so insist on releasing new stuff which doesn’t sell instead of playing on past glories.

They probably don’t want to be seen as moving on to the 80s nostalgia tours where many B list and lower 80s bands play the holiday camp 80s weekends.

Think one of the worst culprits for not sticking to the popular classic stuff is Duran Duran, but many bands do similar. At least the likes of the Pet Shop Boys usually play their classic songs even if only as an encore.

Yes but when you're Cornershop or James, would it kill them to play their one big hit as an encore?
