Had enough of Sky ... help needed

Hi fellow boarders. So after I think 20 years of Sky we've finally had enough of their massive monthly charges when all we actually use it for is to record the occasional show. For what we pay monthly we could easily buy the box set each month. We watch Netflix and Prime anyway. So basically it's time to say goodbye to Sky.

But there's a catch that I need help with. We currently use the recording function (usually something off Normal TV) and also use the RF out to get a signal further round the house.

So we are looking to buy a unit that can record programs for us like a sky box and also have an RF out socket so we get TV in the other rooms in the house.

Any suggestions ? We don't mind paying a lower monthly subscription to something but Sky's prices are now unsustainable.

Preferably an HD signal would be nice. And I do like they Sky App but not essential .

How much are you paying and what is the package?

I currently pay £11.50 a month for the basic package but it does give me Sky+, which is worth that a month as a decent box will be £200.

I was doing the same and Sky offered to let me keep the box and sky+ functionality for not much money and, as we have Sky broadband, it was cheaper than getting rid of the Sky box.

I don’t get any sky channels with that, just freesat. Annoyingly Dave is on free view but not freesat. Apart from that it’s fine

I don’t think so, but I haven’t really looked into it. I just use Now TV to buy the occasional Spurs game.

Sounds like a phone call is in its way. Although I don't have sky broadband though , so less of a strong hand than yours

Yes I paid £10 until a while ago, I believe the basic package is only £20 as they knocked 50% off so I don't think you can be on the basic package but you might be.

Not sure I even needed to speak to anyone to get that, I just cancelled and then clicked on a link.

So I've brought it down to £20 but lost HD and the kids tv recordings in the box.
It's better now but after the call I sat there thinking "what am I actually still getting for £20?". Does a freeview record in box only cost £200? If so I can afford that in 10 months of Sky. I had to commit to 18months so now I feel like I've made the wrong decision.

I also told him Sky is essentially finished at this rate, Netflix is only £8 and has great content for that. He was not impressed, nor either gave a @@@@!

Bizarre. I still have HD and didn’t lose recordings and am paying much less. Presumably you still have Sky channels for that money rather than just freesat? Otherwise you’ve been done. There must be a cooling off period where you can cancel

We still keep the likes of Sky Atlantic yes, we've been out on the Entertainment package. It's only the recordings of something like Nickelodean kids that we'll lose as Nickelodeon isn't in the entertainment package. Same with any HD recordings

I think what annoys me as well is the Sky still think HD is new. No one else (Netflix, BBC, prime) seem to charge more for this, it's given in the service. HD is years old now, it shouldn't be a premium payable item!

Anytime I have to watch an SD channel now, for the first 10 minutes I feel like my eyes are wonky or I've time travelled into the 70's.

Not that we had HD in the 80's mind you.

Netflix charge extra for HD as well don't they? Or at least, you need to be paying for their second tier to get it, though that does also include simultaneous viewing on a second device.

Yes, on the lowest one you don't get HD. It's bizarre that anyone treats it as a premium thing these days, it's been around for years and even the cheapest tv you can buy is HD.

Have you looked at a second hand youview box for recording? They record without a subscription and some models have an RF out. (Go for a BT one rather than a TalkTalk one as the TalkTalk ones are extremely slow)

Sorry doesn't sound like you've been given any sort of a deal there, they've just knocked you back to the basic package and charged you full price. Having HD and losing it, also really messes up series links, etc.

I'd ring them back and say sack it off completely

It's not a "deal" at all, it's reversion to the basic package. I told him I've been s customer for over 20 years. He didn't give a @@@@

It's the new tactic. You need to actually cancel.

I'd cancel it and be prepared to walk but hope they offer a better deal.

Don't cancel it if you're not prepared to leave.
