Star Trek: Discovery - season 2 (January)

Coming January 18th!
Looks like they've listened to a lot of the criticisms. A lighter tone and Klingons looking a bit more like they should.

Has any Vulcan ever sported a beard? OK OK, so he's half Vulcan I guess.

Sybok in Star Trek V?
Spock was also super hairy at the start of The Motion Picture, though that was on top of his head!

Lighter tone?

Looks more of the same to me which isn’t a bad thing. Although is the entire season set in an asteroid field? Not as much wow factor as the original trailer but it’s not all shiny new now.

The first season 2 trailer had a bit of comedy in it, this new one a bit less so.

First trailer looked like they had toned it down and gone for a more lighter tone. This new trailer looks more like in keeping with S1. With the amount of turmoil behind the scenes let's just hope they can put together a coherent season that has a better conclusion then S1.

A few new bits of info:

Quote:
TREKCORE: At first it seemed perhaps just the trailers were updated for this year, but it looks as if – now that the first ‘Short Trek’ is out – that the series has been changed to a 2.40:1 aspect ratio this year.

ALEX KURTZMAN: We have, yes. I pushed that decision. I’m in love with the anamorphic frame. I just think it’s glorious and beautiful and every great film experience I’ve had has been shot anamorphically.

It somehow does two things: it broadens the scale, making everything bigger, but it also somehow increases the intimacy. I don’t know why, it’s just the magic quality of anamorphic filming. But it has allowed us to shoot, essentially, a film now, and to eliminate the line between television and movies.

That’s really fun for us, so you’ll see it feel a lot more like a movie this season.

TREKCORE: Was that difficult to work out with CBS? It is still a television presentation, and you don’t see a lot of shows pushing past the 2:1 ratio Discovery used in Season One.

KURTZMAN: They were actually very supportive of it. It was a little more expensive to do because the lenses are expensive, but they understood why we wanted to do it, and I think they understood we owed it to the fans to make the experience premium. If we’re asking you to pay $10 for it, then you have to get your money’s worth.

So every choice we have made has been about you watching and going, “Well, I couldn’t get that on normal network television.”
Quote:
TREKCORE: Last season overlapped with the holidays at the end of the year – will there be another midseason break, since Season Two doesn’t premiere until January this time around?

KURTZMAN: No, we’re going to go thirteen [episodes] straight.
And in regards to Short Treks:
Quote:
KURTZMAN: They will end up internationally, at some point.
I love that some TV shows are embracing cinematic aspect ratios. Just looks so gorgeous.

Not sure how I feel about this and I understand the technicalities behind this most viewers will be like why do I have black bars.

Kurtzman says this allows them to be more cinematic but 1:85.1 is cinematic too. Are they really going to be making full use of that wider scope?

If you have no problems watching a film in 2.35:1 then why would you have a problem watching a TV show in the same ratio? That's all it is at the end of the day: An aspect ratio. Cinematographers know how to frame them.

Well TV in the widescreen era has traditionally been a 16x9 fare with some examples of 2:1 on in the last few years.

2.35:1 isn't something I against I said I don't know how I feel about it for TV. Seems a very odd choice, plus for folks with sets smaller then 50" you do lose a lot of height for not an awful lot of gain.

Maybe I will see it and think it looks great, but it's concerning that there has been behind the scenes turmoil, running over budget had been a concern and they go and and find a way to make the show even more expensive.

You can make it look as stylish as you want but if they can't address the poor character writing and the subpar climax of the season it's just going to be a more polished looking version of a missed opportunity.

The most recent Short Trek sounds like it was fantastic from the reactions I've been reading. Set 1000 years later and written by Michael Chabon. Would be nice if the world outside of the USA gets to see it too eventually.

It was okay, 18 minutes is just too short and is just a cock tease. It was an interesting premise but just raises so many questions and provides no answers.

These were made to get more money out of Netflix who refused to cough up the cash to carry them and to keep people subscribed to CBS AA.

Put the money into the main series instead of this dross. CBS were lucky that the Netflix money paid for the first season. I doubt Discovery will go for more than 4 seasons if CBS has to stump up the cash on its own.

One main story and how it affects different crews would have been a nice change maybe a new crew picks up the mission after the last is destroyed which is something we have yet to see on Trek. Ships get destroyed and it has little impact; yet those ships had mission which need to be completed etc

CBS treats ST like Disney treats SW as their cash cows. Who is going pay for a service to watch old trek in SD when you can pick up the DVD or Blu rays for next to nothing.

I'd be surprised if it went beyond its second season.

Like has been said without Netflix stumping up the cash this will probably die on its ass before long, it's just not that good.

Section 31 series in the offing, now there is something to hope for the seedier side of Star Trek, but do it right 3 year anthology series spanning the various ages of ST

Enterprise
Discovery/TOS
TNG/DS9 - With more of Sloan

Well if Netflix are happy with the ratings, they'll keep making it.

Not sure its a reason to subscribe to the US equivalent though

Eventually yes, I'm sure. But it's ******* annoying that there's no update on it and it could end up being the season 2 blu-ray before we get to see them.

It certainly seemed a step downwards from Enterprise seasons 3 and 4. Hopefully focusing on Pike as captain will put it back on track. They should kill Burham off at the earliest opportunity

Thought it was kinda beautiful myself. Worked perfectly as a standalone short.
