I'm hoping this is a proper Star Trek set in space with adventures and battles.

And not Picard sitting in the the Federation old peoples home recounting stories every week.

Or Ghost Picard

Mirror Picard would be refreshing and could account for why Riker and some of the others are not around as he killed them to retain command.

Would Starfleet really allow a 78 year old to be an active starship captain? Kudos for their no age discrimination policy if they do.

And cut down the technobabble, later TV trek got into the habit of using it too much Voyager especially.

I think “age” is no longer a barrier in the trek world,
In the books Picard is still going strong and I think they are pretty much “real time” in terms of chronology

I’d hazard a guess that in the time of trek 78 is probably just about the start of “middle age”

I have to say this is the best entertainment news for me ever. TNG was my show, even to the point that I do read a couple of the novels a year

I wander if they will have the trek shows similar to the walking dead shows, one ends, another begins etc

He is a legend

So, set 20 years later but no longer a captain.

They'll probably kill him off to generate some fan outcry, then complain that the fanboys don't like them...

I was thinking more along the lines of Admiral Picard maybe in charge of a star base or Starfleet Academy?

With an annoying millennial cadet officer who Picard can't stand because he reminds him too much of himself. And who gets to do all the action scenes because Stewart is too old. A bit like Gareth Hunt and Steed in the New Avengers.

Picard never really done much in the way of action scenes.

I just watched the Trek con video and I have to say I was a tad bit emotional even Stewart said words that Picard is coming back.

Could be its the Jean Luc Picard Chronicles

Old Picard starts the story off and Tom Hardy is the one doing all the action.

Or could be similar to that with Stewart narrating the story of his time at the academy and on the Stargazer. With occasional flash forwards to him sitting in his rocking chair with cameo appearances from TNG.

I take it by this point everyone has watched Prelude to Axanar on YouTube. It was a great fan made film starring some recognisable actors who had been in Star Trek. You probably also know how the powers that be, or to use a more Star Trek reference, the soulless minions of orthodoxy stopped it from continuing. Then Discovery comes along and the season 1 premise looks oddly similar.

Yet I could totally see how an older yet more Jaded disillusioned Admiral Picard, who had been stuck looking after a starbase or working at Starfleet Command instead of being out among the stars; could be called upon to take command if the Federation is suddenly attacked (either by an old or a new enemy).

However, there was something in the way Patrick Stewart was announcing Picard’s return that leads me to believe he would like it to be more like the positive future of TNG than the more action based movies.

I'm guessing it'll be Picard as an old man, probably with Shia LaBeouf as his protege/son he doesn't know about. He'll pass the baton after the first few episodes.

I'd think he'll be an ambassador or running a colony. Something which will allow them to base the scenes around rooms rather than Star ships. Just on a cost basis more than anything else. Picard was never much of an action guy anyway and I'm fine with that.

Shouldn't Picard be on a vineyard by now, waiting for Geordi to show up?

So like The Phantom Menace, with just the negotiation bits, and none of the action?

I'm guessing the Discovery series was not a huge success, I got bored and couldn't follow who was who (didn't massively try) so I'd guess maybe Netflix has pitched a "why not bring back Picard" type show
