Does the android BBC Iplayer app let you download content (like the mobile apps) or just steam?

Might have to be a second hand Mac Mini or something.
I don't know what your budget is but until recently I was using a Gigabyte Brix (one of the old i3 models, was only about £100) and an external 4TB HDD for Plex and general server duties, worked great and seemingly very power efficient with all the flexibility of a reasonably capable PC.

On-topic: I did seriously consider the Shield console before I got a Nexus Player, and now that I have seemingly lost the bloody remote for that I may look at getting a Shield console again. It is expensive for what I would use it for and I couldn't seem to find much information on the in-home streaming performance last time I looked.

I've tried dozens of media solutions over the years and now eventually gone back to a £100 mini-pc running plex.

yes, it took a few days of tweaking to get right, but it's the only solution for me now. There's never anything that can't play and i know i can play to any other device that supports DNLA.

I wouldn't go back.

The main issue I have with plex is the reliance on their auto labelling stuff. It often gets it wrong.

Much prefer a file based view of everything, at least as an option.

No it's the same as the console/roku app really however mine seems to have a framerate issue where after a while it starts jittering (so don't use it very often) not seen it with other apps.

You can have that in Plex, just add your video files folder as a Home Video source in Plex and it won't automatically label them, just present the files which you can change to view by folder. I use this view for trailers and music videos and the like.

It's live on the US store $149.99 which works out to be about £100. We get it for £20 more Also apparently it's on at 12:40pm as Amazon lighting deal - possibly be about the same price.

Sorry, got that wrong then Eurogamer article says it's from Thursday midnight, guess trustedreviews jumped the gun a day before. Worth keeping an eye on Amazon at midday today.

If you plug an external HDD into one of these can you share it over your network with samba or something? Basically, can it be used as a real simple server? Maybe with the aid of an app or something.

Usually depends on how fast they sell, if the price is low these are likely to go quick. Also some deals are offered to Prime members 30 mins before they are are to other customers.
