Utterly ridiculous - Plex and BBC iPlayer could have both worked fine on the Apple TV 3.

No doubt ATV3 users will not see them.

Don't they need internal storage though?

Don't think so - both have been on numerous other streaming boxes.

They would need some space to cache all the data, artwork, etc, but as XBMC could be installed on a jailbroken ATV2 I'm sure it could have gone on the 3 if Apple had let it (or had they been able to jailbreak it). The ATV 4 is different though isn't it, they're actually allowing third party apps with this and encouraging them. Previously they didn't at all.

atv3 already had channels/apps pushed out - netflix, vimeo, youtube, nowtv etc. (lots more in US) so iplayer/plex would have worked. Just lazy. Apparently Apple say it was down to the BBC. I think as far as plex goes, apple had previously stopped that. Yes you can add Plex with a soft hack called plex connect, but its fiddly to do.

Any troubles accessing unblock us through the new Apple TV?

Despite my previous comment i've ordered a 32gb version alongside a new router. Fed up with my current wifi drop outs, so have set myself a little project for next weekend.

I take it there's no issue in running the apple tv through the hdmi in of the xbox one?

What router? If it's an Asus that can run Merlin's version of the Asus firmware it has a feature to let you specify DNS servers for devices on the home network by MAC number, makes it really handy to set up multiple devices so they only use it at home. I use that for Unlocator (similar to Unblockus).

As to the first, there is no issue, but you have to change the iTunes store location in settings, to get voice control.

Can't help with the 2nd part.

Indeed, it is an Asus RT-N66U. Thanks for the tip. I have other workarounds, just be handy to get the Apple TV up to par too.

Thanks.

Ah, yes, I have one of those, that's one of the supported ones. Check out here;

http://www.snbforums.com/threads/asu...-routers.7846/
http://asuswrt.lostrealm.ca/features
http://asuswrt.lostrealm.ca/sites/de.../dnsfilter.png

The main feature for me is that DNS filtering. It makes it much easier and no scripts involved (under Aiprotection > DNS Filtering, just add Unblockus' DNS server as a custom server).

He updates it regularly as well.

I consider myself quite techy but when it comes to networking and routers all the acronyms make my eyes go squiffy.

Thanks for the links

As Lou mentions, putting in account details and passwords is very laborious. It's remarkable how something so vital to the end user is such a chore to accomplish. The constant swishing left and right on the lil' track pad isn't something you'd associate with Apple.

I was kind of hoping this would become my one stop box for media consumption. I currently use an Xbox One for Plex, Netflix, Hulu, iPlayer and All Four.

I wanted to be able to switch all those to the Apple TV and just keep my pins devoted to games on the XB1. I'd forgotten that Apple restrict certain apps to territories. So if I want to watch Hulu, I've got to log in with a US account, which will then cancel out my UK account which I use to subscribe to Apple Music.

It's a lot more faffing than I'd hope for, so as it stands it'll probably just be used for Apple Music and a swanky backdrop when my TV is idle.

If Apple sees fit to open up all apps regardless of territory then it'd be a killer media streamer.

Plex works great for me. Netflix likewise. Those two alone, working on a device that like uses the same electricity as a lightbulb (or something) blows my mind, and makes it worth it alone. You only have to switch to the US account to get Hulu onto your ATV surely? Then it will work fine as long as you are using Unblock's DNS.

Plex and Netflix is exactly what I use on my Samsung TV too. Plex especially is great as a media streamer with all the artwork and info it pulls just from filenames. Very impressed with that.

That's how it works on the previous ATV's, my Sister has hers set up this way. For whatever reason when I change to US it prompts me that 'this Apple ID is only valid for purchases in the UK store. You will be switched to that store'.

So it'd mean creating a new US iTunes account, which seeing as I have other methods to watch Hulu, seems a bit redundant.

PC games now streaming on the new Apple TV4 courtesy of a hack of Nvidia's tech from their media player.

Thanks - no updates for ATV3, yes you can say they want people to buy ATV4, but they are still selling the ATV3, plex could easily work on an ATV3.

Will stick to a Samsung/ATV3 combination.

As stated before ATV4 with no optical out means won't be going near it anytime soon.
