My thoughts exactly. A little 'by numbers' and not really progressive in any way. I like a small group around the middle but I am not really getting any further than that. 'Mind Your Manners' still sounds like PJ parodying 'Spin The Black Circle' and it doesn't quite work. Lyrically a lot of the lines feel shoehorned in and dare I say it, a little lazy. I hope it grows on me because this and Backspacer and turning into a disappointing career trajectory.

I just downloaded it from my 10c account and on first listen, i like it a lot. There are some duffers but on the whole, Sirens, Pendulum and Mind your manners are great.

EDIT: My problem with this album it plays it way too safe.

EDIT2: I am really starting to enjoy this album. Way better than Backspacer.

It's OK. So was Backspacer. Unless they change their approach significantly, I'm resigned to the fact that my once-favourite band will release a non-essential album every few years, it'll have a few decent tunes on it, and that's about all I'll expect, and they can play a few of them at gigs along with the greats. If releasing new stuff keeps them together and touring, fine.

No matter what he's singing, Eddie will always have a great voice, and like Backspacer, the drumming carries a lot of it. I'm not ready to become my Dad yet and expect greatness from my old favourite bands. There are other bands keeping me excited.

I find it very surprising that of my two favourite bands from my school days - Pearl Jam and Machine Head - it's the latter who are keeping me more entertained in my thirties.

I've been listening to Lightning Bolt a lot over the past few days - a lot more than I did with Avocado and Backspacer, which I still feel somewhat unfamiliar with. It's a bit of a grower, but not really a classic album. It sounds a lot better played in my car at high volume.

Getaway - a strong opener which I didn't originally click with, but it's extremely melodic and musically very funky.
Mind Your Manners - yeah, this is great. Sounds better taken in the context of the album than it did as a single.
My Father's Son - first track on the album that feels a bit weird, catchy enough but nothing amazing.
Sirens - I'm going back and forth on whether I like this or not. It's very cheesy and ventures into Nickelback territory at points, but it's also very soothing and a bit haunting.
Lightning Bolt - pretty bland, but finishes much stronger than it starts. Sounds almost identical to Unthought Known to my ear.
Infallible - best song on the album, very catchy and has an awesome rhythm. Clear similarities to Tremor Christ but goes in a very different direction too. Excellent lyrics.
Pendulum - Nah, I don't like this. It doesn't go anywhere. An odd mood piece.
Swallowed Whole - this one has completely washed over me.
Let The Records Play - awesome guitar work, and an strange little nod to old rock and roll? It's an interesting diversion on the album.
Sleeping By Myself - this is a charming little thing.
Yellow Moon - I quite like this bluesy rocker but it needs a bit more energy. It's like a subdued version of Red Mosquito.
Future Days - possibly the worst PJ song I've ever heard. It's like an overly sweet Christmas song from a cheesy movie.

I find myself wanting to keep listening to it. At the moment I'm flitting between 6 or 7 out of 10.

I think that if you took the best tracks from Avocado, Backspacer and Lightning Bolt you could make something very special.

For me it goes downhill when you get to Let The Records Play which I'm not sure of and LHG is right in that Future Days is one of their worst tracks.

Mostly in agreement. I think you're a bit harsh on Swallowed Whole and Pendulum is an interesting track. A lot of the tracks are best turned up, you are right.

Avocado I like as an album anyway but this does feel like Backspacer 2 and the best of both would be a much stronger, if still rather unexceptional, album.

Vs is 20 years old today by the way. So stick that on instead

Personally I'm really enjoying this one - even Future Days, which I certainly don't think is their worst ever track. I particularly love Getaway, Sirens, Infallible and Pendulum.

At first I would have said that the first 7 tracks of the album would have made an awesome EP and it should have ended there, but the rest have grown on me a lot since and I wouldn't now agree with that. Repeated listening, in the car at a decent volume definitely helped with this.

seen them twice(ish), first time was backing Neil Young in '95 was a great show but can't really tell how good Pearl Jam were (no Eddie). Saw them headline Reading in 2006, they where amazing, had to buy the official bootleg of the show (could be slightly biased as they played a Mother Love Bone song and they are one of my favourite bands) which is still my favourite live Pearl Jam I have (an I have about 10)

Quite liking the album, some songs take a bit of listening, but overall one of my more favourable of there recent releases

This is really not leaving much of an impression on me. I think I preferred Backspacer, which at least felt more energetic....

It's grown on me massively after a couple of weeks with it in my car. First half of the album is especially good, with the second half being a little more mixed. Much better than Avocado and Backspacer, methinks. I still feel that it's lacking any emotional punch but the songwriting is of a higher standard.

Hehe they will apparently add more UK dates. People on PJ.com seems to think a 2nd Leeds show and a Glasgow date will be confirmed.

The First Direct Arena in Leeds is a really good building (I saw Springsteen there), as its designed more like an amphitheatre, but it's not very big. It'll sell out in minutes.

I'd go if they came to Birmingham, but I can't see me travelling any further.
