I'll try connecting my external drive to it and see if that helps.
I had the same problems over a network. I ended up adding a 500gb drive to the Wdtv and just copy stuff over to it via the network.

Having more issues now with YouTube. It's playing videos fine but when it reaches the end of the video, instead of letting me go back to the menu it's shutting the box down. Also, to minimise the effect of the network, I tried the goto function on a very small avi file and it still locked the system up. I suspect it's buggered in some way. I'll request a replacement to see if that's any better.

HI...a dumb question if I may.....

I'm thinking about setting up a media/streaming solution at home, based on a NAS, primarily for music, but I also would like to have a solution for showing photographs or videos on my tv, and be able to access services such as Netflix (given that I am not able to rip DVDs in the way that I can CDs...).

I saw a friends new Apple TV yesterday, and was very impressed...but reading through these notes am I right to guess that the ATV would be only usable with an Apple/IoS system, and I may be better off with a WD device?

Would the WD work with Apple devices? We have a variety of iPads (mini or otherwise), iPhones, HTC phones, laptops around the house...and I'd like to bring together photographs from all of those devices.

cheers

mike

I picked up a WD Live TV yesterday, hope to get some time to set it up today. I cant see straight away how to stream photos to the TV from iPads or Android phones, but I hope that once I install the apps it will all become clear.

cheers all

It's not designed for that. It can connect wirelessly to your PC and stream from there or you can plug in a USB stick or external HDD with media from there.

Apple have their own media player and I don't know about android.

Most video streamers like WDTV, Popcorn Hour, Boxee etc are very poor for streaming music. Their intended use is video streamers, music is an afterthought.

Apple TV will do what you want via airplay AFAIK but it's not a particularly good video streamer due to it's limited format playback.

I've gone for one of those Android G-Box Midnight devices for the bedroom, and flashed it with XBMClinux. Looks pretty good so far, not sure how good HD will be over wi-fi, but SD seems fine. Plus, it's XBMC, so it's about the best interface you can get!

There is also an M2 model which is better specs.

Thanks chaps, I'm more interested in showing photographs on the TV...though have fallen in love with Netflix via the WD :-) (Am I the only person in the country to have not seen Breaking Bad?). Looks like I have to get an Apple TV also now, and will try to create a solution for Android phones, will also try and linkup my PC to show photographs later also.

cheers

Why not just get a nettop PC and it will do everything?

It's not without its technical limitations and can be a little clunky, but it plays everything you throw at it and it's cheap.

I'm looking to replace mine and the closest I can find in a reasonable price without buying a nettop is The Little Black Box.

http://www.thelittleblackbox.nl/en/

Have you tried resetting you Boxee back to factory settings or is it beyond that?

Just realised it only has 1 USB slot. Was hoping it would have 2 like my boxee so I could attach 2 2tb hds and stream another from my mac
